Pins won't get tight!!

Hey guys-

So I have a razor with loose pins. I've tried to tighten them with a bunch of small taps, but it doesn't seem to be getting tighter. I've taken a closer look, and I think the collar (washer? not sure what these are refered to as :thinking:) may be broken. I can't tell for sure though. The collar is still there and all, but I see a line in it, which I think may be a very small crack.

If it is a hairline crack in the collar, I'm guessing that would that keep from the pin tightening as it should? Thanks!

Have you pinned razors before?
Because I am unsure about your 'small taps'.
If you have pinned razors before, you'll know how much force is needed to tighten a pin.
If you haven't, then the problem might as well be that you are just tapping too softly.

Not to muddy things up, Bruno nailed my first reaction, but I'd be currious as to the condition of the razor in general. I've had a few problem children and each one was slightly different. From a cracked collar to a work hardened pin that crached long before it tightened... Not to mention one that seems to have been pinned with a nail... That was funny the first time I hit it... BOING

No experience pinning. That may be the problem! :) I'm going to give it another go tonight, see what happens. I checked out Glen's video, which should improve my tapping technique. Let's see what happens!! Thanks for the help guys.

Razor is in good shape overall. I got it from the classifieds here from a good guy, so I know it's good. So just not sure when the collar may have cracked, I never dropped it or anything. Oh well, the mysteries of life!! I'll see how my attempt goes tonight!

I've heard all about the spoon thing, and tried it myself with no luck at all. You need a small ball-peen hammer, a really hard surface, and a certain amount of balls for your peening...... it takes a bit more force than you think. The problem is that the force required is just short of the force it takes to bend a pin or crack the scales.

You have to try. Oh, I have a cigar box full of broken scales......

Got them tight!! With some improved technique from the video, I struck a little harder than my first attempt and I got the pins nice and tight. I used the spoon method, but I felt I needed a little more weight, so I loaded it with a few quarters. Not the most orthodox pin tightening method, but it worked well. Thanks for the input and tips guys, much appreciated!
