If it is a metal inlay, Glen (gssixgun) did a video on removing them.
If it is just cast into the scales, there is a thread around on casting your own scales from a mold made from the old ones IIRC.

This one is not metal and not really worth the trouble to make a cast. However, there are some metal ends I want to salvage off some other scales, so thanks for the info!
If the scales are celuloid you can simply weld them together with acetone.
