What kind of compounds are you using?
Try WD40, or plain water.
Dico compound
Grease less, Bars, tube?

i used to use a compound on the metal bands on my duck/goose calls that was hard as a rock .. i used to load the wheel by running the dremell wheel on the compound until i could see it covered the wheel ..
Put the buffing compound in a airtight plastic container with half an inch of water in the bottom. The compound will absorb the water and rehydrate. I've had to do it a couple of times when I've forgotten to put my buffing compound away properly after using it.
Directly in the tubes they came in??? Maybe like a tub a ware container??
Yes. Tube and water into tupperware container. It will rehydrate.
It's actually how I keep mine all year round. It keeps them really soft and supple for the wheels. I never have a problem applying compound or losing a bunch of it on the wall behind the bench.
Hope this helps.
