wood question....

I'm looking for a wood that has a natural contrast between a dark and light. Not a uniform contrasting, but more of a mixed interphase. Perhaps between the middle and outer areas of the tree..

Is this making any sense? :thinking:
Any suggestions?

Cocobolo with sapwood might work.

Walnut also has this effect going from the middle to the outer parts of the tree, and also Zebrawood (Zebrano), which has alternating black and white stripes... You might consider various spalted woods, lots of colors there, but they might require stabilizing...

Zebrawood, aka a$$wood as that is what it smells like when you machine it might look good on some scales esp if you dye it a blood red or other deep color. Its kind of a light tan and dark tan striped wood in a clear finnish. I made a pen out of Zebrawood for a friend that went to Iraq and it ended up a dead match for his desert camo uniform. His other officer friends we very envious.

What I was trying to describe would be wood that had similar contrast-mixing as this horn bowl that classicshaving offers (see attached picture). I think I have seen 'kingswood' look like this, but wasn't sure, and figure that you guys might be aware of something else....
