First attempt at a restoration

Here are some pics of my first attempt to clean up and restore a str8.

I forgot to take a before shot but it was in about the same condition as this one.

After some hand sanding, then buffing, using a bit attached to a drill, and then a metal polish this is the result.

Now to start on making a set of scales.

Great job! Can I ask you for details on the process of hand sanding etc. ? I'm slowly acquiring the felt wheels and greaseless compounds to convert my bench grinder into a buffer but til then I think I'm gonna have a crack at restoring by hand just so I know what it's like. What Grits did you use etc?

Might I suggest that you visit your local sign sho and see if they have some off-cuts of acrylic to use for scales.

I've had lots of good results from that method - cheap too

You might want to try some MAAS to the original scales to see how they look. Nothing like an original restore. Bengall's make nice shavers

Too cool, my first simple restore was a Bengall a well. It was in excellent shape and needed little work to make it shine. It was a stepping stone to my next restore, a Dubl Duck that I am still working on. The Bengall is on the ebay right now after a few shaves but here is a picture of it; Attachment 123155

I guess I was more of an intensive cleaning than an actual restore! I found the simple act of making a razor useful again very satisfying.

I would but I actually have some sleepers that are nicer and my bride is hot about some of my recent purchases so something had to give:p.

I bought what was available at Bunnings, roughly 100 grit through to 1200.
I also used a kit that attaches to a power drill, it came with a green and a white compound., then I finished it of with a hand polish.

Here are some pics of the finished project.

I think the wedge might be a tad thick and I need more practice on the wood finish but all in all I am pretty happy with my first attempt.

It's a Bengall 5/8" (I think/hope I got it right), the scales are Tasmanian Oak finished with marine varnish with brass pins.

After that I need to purchase a strop, watch videos and learn more on technique and then I should be right to try my first SR shave.

Oz is a long way from Coota but his honing is worth the extra price of a couple of post bags.
