Scale Experimentation.....Goes Wrong

Thought I would post this since it made me mad. :mad: So I had some thin pauduk and yellowheart that I decided to put together and see how it would turn out. After I had the wood together I figured it would look alot better with the edges beveled to where you could just see the yellowheart around the pauduk and it did. I had one scale done and thought I could actually use them instead of just experimenting. I started on the other one and for some reason thought they were still to thick so I went back to the first scale. I always tape my scales onto a bigger piece of wood to make holding them alot easier, but for some reason this time I decided I would just do it quick and try to hold the 3mm thick scale with my finger tips :gaah: and sand it thinner. Anyway the scale slipped out of my hand and somehow slipped under the guard and wrapped around the belt. Needless to say the scale was in a few pieces after that. I guess if I didn't decide that I could actually use the scales they would have turned out. Never got around to finishing the other one, but it gives me some ideas. Here is how far it turned out. The bottom of the scale is the look I was going for. Just enough yellowheart to poke out to show along the side of the pauduk. Next time I will have to make sure to tape them to something bigger that I can hold on to.

Well, you only have to go back to square 1 on half the set and no fingers were hurt during the incident. Is/was looking like a nice pair.

There are some really cool wood scales that were done in the distant past on SRP IIRC called "Fusion Scales" some really neat effects doing sorta like you started, you should do some searches and take a look it might give you some good ideas :)

I've sanded through my fair share of keratin thinning scales on the belt sander. My fingernails know your pain.

The difficulty just makes you appreciate the end result more. I glued a scale to my hand mid-way through doing my first CA finish. Eventually I got everything sorted out and I'm mighty fond of that razor now.

I am glad I still have my finger tips. I think if/when I decide to try this again I will just make a new set cause the other one is rather wobbly around the edges the closer I looked at it. Those fusion scales give me loads of ideas. I like the look of some of them. Seems like they would be a challenge and fun to do.

I have had some issue like this before. I recommend you turn any "rejects" into earring for the wife. This will add weight to your argument regarding purchasing new wood supplies. :) When the wife is happy, we are all happy

was turning a brush handle a few days ago,multi wood composite,ivory, horn,the sucker was fantastic,Have a real High mountain White knot for it which is an amazing Knot BTW.
Was done, ready for cutoff,maybe a little more polishing me thinks,Re-chuck it,ran the tailstock live center back in place,give it a couple cranks,split the entire handle into 3 pces:( 8 hrs of work destroyed in a second.Bad stuff happens,but so do's good sometimes.

Have never seen such a knot,is beautifull,but spendy.

I got it from a site and it was about $16 for 26mm so figured I would try it out.

The one I got was called High Mountain finest badger not silvertip. I should have specified that since I am assuming you mean silvertip now. I thought I would try it after reading a post on here saying that it was a really nice knot.

I got a 26mm brush handle that the knot is going to go into and compared to the 20-22mm brushes I have and it is huge. I really didn't think it would be that much bigger. I didn't realize just how big 4-6mm really is.

OMG what did you use for the knot? the bottom of a broom? Never seen a knot that big. I think a brush that size bloomed out would lather your entire face in one swirl. To think I thought 26mm was big. How wrong I was.

I can actually picture myself using two hands and face lathering with the thing. Laughing the entire time. Hmmm I think you need to post a video of you lathering with it. :p

Always manage to miss the nail and go straight for the nuckle on the 80 girt belt...I think my belt sander doesn't like me sometimes.
