Scaling a razor with a wide tang

I used fabled search feature and didn't find anything on this, so you'll have to forgive me if it's been covered.

I'm trying to scale up a Wade and Butcher and as of yet, I haven't made the wedge. I mocked it up to see what I could expect when everything is said and done but the width of the tang concerns me. It isn't huge per se, but it is thicker than the other razors I have scaled. Is there any advice other than what's been noted in the wiki for making sure I have adequate clearance? I have made spacers for my other scales vs wedges and the thickness has been about 1/8th of an inch max. I'm almost expecting the answer to be something plainly simple, such as "use a thicker wedge".

You adjust the angle on the wedge to fit the angle on the tang, with the depth that you want the razor to sit at

So you have 3 areas of concern...

The Wedginess of the wedge (Angle) should create a nice even bow (Flex) in the scales to that it comes together evenly at the Tang and matches that angle again, this creates the correct "Action" then this also has to tie in with how low you want the razor to close at, which is determined by the thickness of the wedge...


I did not make this stuff up you simply have to look at how razors were made over the last 300 years and you will see why they did things a certain way, and why things progressed the way they did...

Look at these, see the way they are adjusted to sit in the scales, especially the second one as the etch is displayed, the other two show their stamps off on the tang even when closed.. note that the Bottom of the tang is tucked inside the scales... This is the way they were done from the factory too, I just made the angles the same, and used new materials..

They do not get any wider than this (a full 5/16s),nothing special,scaled like any other razor.

Glen is right on,the wedge is of concern,My biggest problem was fitting it so the blade did not protrude from the bottom of the scales
