Scales with handtools only. What material?

You're really telling me to think about MORE tools to buy?? Now you're just being evil haha

I forgot to order bone for a wedge. Doh! Would 1/8 be a good starting point or should I get something thicker like 1/4 or 3/8 to start? I imagine 1/8 would be thick enough, but I've never made a wedge or spacer before.
