Please help me if you can!!! New razor destined for the bin?!

I had this razor bought for me by my two little girls for father's day as a restoration project. I've stripped the scales (which were cracked anyway), and was at the buffing stage of blade restoration when it snatched on the wheel leaving me with the two pieces you see here:

Is it a write off? I know in my heart of hearts that it can't be realistically fixed, but even though it's new to me, it holds seltimental value because my little girls bought it for me. I planned to have this on my "keeper" list to cherish for ever, and now it's in bits.

Can anyone suggest anything?!

Sorry to see,jb weld it and hang it on the wall.

You could drill and tap the razor, add a handle, wrap it and use the razor like a kamisori. You could drill both pieces and use a peg two join the two halves. Alignment will be an issue but with a little patience, maybe an undersized peg and some JB weld the sky is the limit!

Hope that doesn't sound crazy, just trying to be helpful.

Whith the right prep,wire and temp. control i don't see why the handle cant be mig welded on the back side

I don't know, it may be to hot of a process. Heat is the razors arch enemy! If you lose the temper you lose the razors ability to hold an edge.

I'm not saying don't do it but I would be leery of the heat and the splatter!

If it was mine id try to silver solder it together first. I know thats not a very sturdy fix but its the only way I know of doing it without grinding a bevel and welding on it. I would stand the blade part in a can of water so that heat didnt transfer to the blade. They also make a heat sink putty you can wrap and mold around the parts you dont want heated. If that didnt work I would weld it together with a tig welder and if you cant find a good tig welder then mig would be the next option.

I agree with whiskerharvest... tap it and make it like a kamisori.

Glen has a thread somewhere where he did the same and it turned out awesome!

Go to a reputable machinist shop, they should have a proper heat sink or a least better advice.

Man that's a bummer, sorry to hear that. The girls will understand :)
I haven't drilled through a razor but I assume it's a bear given the hardness?

Thanks all for the advice and input! I've had a poke around back through the archives (I know I should have done it first, sorry but i was gutted!) and found a few good ideas to get me thinking! I'll have a play around with it over the next week or so and hopefully I'll come up with something.

Maybe Laser Beam Welding could be a possibility, a colleague of mine repared some clock parts that way (he a dental technican) without bigger scars and in such a fast way that the hardening of the razor maybe wont be damaged.

Friend of mine did that,I swere he can weld two hairs together.

And, did it work with a razor?
I dont know but i think it could be possible.

Another one bites the dust! Keep anything spinning going away from sharp edges!(you know that now!) ;) It can be tig welded OR , as suggested, become a non-folder. That is a heavy wedge. I don't think heat would be an issue as welding with tig.
Either way, the tang stamp is lost.

I'm with you,,tap 2 small holes in what's left of the tang, epoxy or pin it into a nice wood handle.

The fact that the tang snapped means its probably very hard . Drilling would be like drilling a file IMHO.

Drilling is not an option. However, laser beam welding would work, and be near invisible. The amount of heat transferring to the blade would be negligible.

As everyone is saying, non folder. The Korn "The Real" razor is made like that. Find some sweet handle material.

What about sending it out to someone that is forging their own razors? Ask them if they can melt it down, reuse the steel and make you a new one?

I vote for the laser weld and repair the hole with a carbide dremel bit. Patience coupled with the right expertise could very well pull this off.

i work as a cnc gear grinder. after heat treating all the gears that come through our shop have a rockwell hardness of about 40 with a case hardening of around .0600 thick. this is almost impossible to drill through. i would guess that the handle of the razor, being thin is cased hardened completely through the entire tang. also the fact that the tang cracked so easily could indicate that during the manufacturing process the razor may not have been kept probably cooled leading to micro fractures in the steel. a nondestructive magpartical inspection would be able to eliminate this as a factor. also welding a heat treated piece of steel will distroy the case harding and the razors ability to hold as edge. if it were my razor i don't think i would invest any more money in it.

I also would recommend making it in to a Kamisori, but instead of drilling holes in the remaining tang I would make a nice hardwood handle and cut a notch in it to slide the remaining tang in to it securing it with a high strength epoxy. It would at least be an easier fix that would make it still usable.

Erhm... no. :)

Melting down a razor takes resources and equipment that we typically don't have.
But even if we make do, we lose material (because steel remains in the crucible) and carbon (because it evaporates from the molten steel), and the little dribble of steel you get from a razor is not enough by far to make a new razor.

If you make a razor, a good amount of steel is ground away from the blank. If you'd somethow turn this razor into a new blank, you're going to lose material again; material which you already don't have to spare.

Besides, the amount of fuel you need for melting this razor would be more expensive than a razor sized steel bar of stock.

by chance i just finished restauring an old sheffield that was broken at the same location. I soldered it with a spezial silver solder paste. Two aspects are important when doing this. You must use a very hot and focused flame (best is a propan or butan burner combined with oxygen) so u can bring in much energie in short Time. The second thing is, you must cover the rest of the Blade with wet tissues and sprink Water on them all the time. So a helping hand is recomended.
I managed to get it very close soldered and the brand is still visible. A little solder line will always remain, but i think thats better then nothing...

By the way, drilling hardened steel is no problem if u use a carbide drill. So the other solution of making a kamisori style razor out of it works too.
