Seems it is a North American thing, along with other parts of the world.
In parts of Europe though, pasted strops are, and have been for ages, the bee's knees:)
Personally I have played around with it for some time, and it does work just fine.
Set/reset bevel and then work a progression of pastes all the way to a finishing strop.
Out of all the razors I have handled, the one that was the sharpest and smoothest out of the box was honed using that very method.
A custom maker from Europe did it, and by golly, that thing impressed anyone who tried it out.
Still, me like them hones too much to not choose them as my preferred method.
