3k then CrOx

I was watching a YouTube video about Mastro Livi making a razor and was interested on his honing technique. From what he said he only uses a 3k Kai stone then goes to CrOx for quite a few laps.

Has anyone used his method?

I assume it works well since from my understanding his edges are amazing.

Never tried nor will I, but this goes to show how many different methods there are. Try it and see. One thing that I think we need to understand is the barbers used maybe a 6 or 8k max barbers hone and were able to do a few laps, leather and chop another 20 beards. Ive never shaved off a Mastro Livi but Ive heard wonderful things about them.

Oddly enough, just recently a new guy fell into this method and posted about it. I was dubious... But maybe its a thing?

So I tried it on my american knife co. Razor. Gave it a go. It was really sharp. Not too smooth though.

Went 4k Norton (which may be the problem, I just got the 4/8k today) to CrOx for about 50-60 laps.

There ya go, high 5 Brother that is what I like to read, I am most impressed that you saw something, asked a question, and then decided to go test it yourself.. We need more people like you, the ones that say "I am going to go see what happens"..

I bet you keep messing with it and tweaking the process you will get it to work for you...

I'm going to work with the Norton a bit to get used to the feel of it. The system definitely has potential.

I'm going to try it on an older Sheffield near wedge tomorrow. And put CrOx in a piece of vintage linen I have laying around instead of the leather I have it on. I'll have more results tomorrow.

This was some years back so forgive any errors in my memory

It was from one of the EU forums that I read a linked post and basically it was saying the we (SRP) are hone fanatics and that many there used 1k -3k stones then moved to a loom strop with pastes to bring the edge into being.. basically set the bevel and then smooth it up using a convex approach using paste..
These guys swore by it.. honestly part of that was what got me originally thinking that the "One Stone" hone system should work..

It is a shame how some of the old honing information is getting lost. I remember not so long ago 3 years or so, the hone you were recommended to refresh a dull blade was a Barbers hone.
How often do you hear a Barbers hone mentioned now?
Same with new people to honing being told "get you edge sorted on a 8k then invest in a finisher/polisher"

These days it seem everyone want to rush out and buy 12k Naniwa's and the latest greatest natural high gritters.

Back to basic guys, extract the best from what you have before running out for the 'Holy Grail'
