Like Glen says, we are rather stone-centric around here.
Seems it is a North American thing, along with other parts of the world.
In parts of Europe though, pasted strops are, and have been for ages, the bee's knees
Personally I have played around with it for some time, and it does work just fine.
Set/reset bevel and then work a progression of pastes all the way to a finishing strop.
Out of all the razors I have handled, the one that was the sharpest and smoothest out of the box was honed using that very method.
A custom maker from Europe did it, and by golly, that thing impressed anyone who tried it out.
Still, me like them hones too much to not choose them as my preferred method.Bjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

Thanked: 3227Well, there is always more than one way to skin a cat but I'll stay with hones since I may finally have that sorted out.

Second attempt: C. F. Wolfertz Allentown razor.
Bevel set on king 800 due to some chipping, 40 circles on Norton 4k followed by 25x strokes. Then linen treated heavily with CrOx in sets of 10 checking the edge after each set. Did 6 sets and thought it looked nice so did 10 more laps. Followed by vintage dubl duck Russian strop.
Here is the edge at 60x.
Shave was super smooth and edge felt like shaving with a blunt object. Felt no hairs being cut but had a 2 pass BBS shave.
Prep was hot shower
Soap was tiki spice island (my goto soap)
Brush was omega boar face lathered

Thanked: 177Although the system can work, I like variety and think it would be very boring to hone a blade exactly the same. No spice of life. But YMMV as always.

Thanked: 44Looks really interesting and a bet that Livi fellow is a bit of a character I don't have any crox, my understanding from this site is that not all CrOx is built the same. Has anyone got any sources for decent stuff in the UK as I'd love to give this a go

mike1011,
Mr Miller stocks 0.5 micron CrOx (and cerium oxide) powder :
Chrome-, Cerium- & Tin Oxide Powder
I use it by rubbing the powder directly onto a leather paddle strop (don't breathe in the dust !!). It only takes a little powder to do the job
Have fun
Best regards
Russ

Stones-naturals, synthetics, barber hones; pastes of many colors and grit sizes; and don't forget lapping films; and I'm reading more about stropping progressions and playing around with that-there are many roads to sharp. For many of us, I think playing around with them, learning and experimenting (on our own faces!) is half the fun!
