I think I remember a Dove video in which a worker is wearing a ring of some soft metal (maybe lead?) on their thumb and they dragged the edge along that ring.

That sounds like it. RIP
This is my first post in this thread, but I have read all the posts here. I know nothing about "jointing" , interesting as the discussion has been.
But,,,,
Here is what I do know; we all spend our free time here, we all share a common interest and we all have different levels of experience. When you take a look at the participation in day to day topics, the number of us that engage each other in discussion is fewer than you might think.
Meaning,, we must keep the peace among us. Senior members are the core of this site. When tension gets to the point that senior members cannot communicate with each other, it effects us all.
Please keep the peace here Gentlemen,
I did see the Dovo video with the horn. It was my impression that they were using it to test for bevel set like a TNT. I think the announcer said something to that effect. I also saw another video with a grinder using a ring. As I understood it, he was using the ring to test the blade for flex.
Been playing with jointing the edge for a while, depending on condition of razor. Found the corner of the hone a bit harsh, the TNT works better for me, does the same thing. Basically you are bending the fin over and knocking off the high points at a molecular level.
Seems this is one of those "whatever works" threads.
One thing is for sure, once you get that edge right all you need to maintain that edge is a lead dressed strop ...
