Question about using pastes

Stropping with linens and pastes has now become a regular part of my maintenance program with my razors. - and, it's working quite well! :)

I read once, a while back, that we need to clean the edge of our razor after we hone/strop with pastes. I do that. After using paste, I take a cotton ball, saturated with isopropyl alcohol, I brush/wipe lightly the edge at a 90 degree angle, 3 or 4 times. I then wipe/dry with tissue and start stropping. :)

Weather I am supposed to do this or not, everything is working just fine. :shrug: I'll continue to do this no matter what. I feel it's a good thing to do, and it feeds my OCD's.

Is this the accepted thing to do? :confused:

It would only be considered OCD if you cleaned the edge with above mentioned method, and then proceeded to inspect for cleanliness via microscope.

As it stands now, you are just nuts, not really crazy.;)

I tend to use water to wipe the razor then I dry it off before stropping but other than that....

It's always necessary to clean off one grit before going to a smaller one. I clean between the 4000 and the 8000, the 8000 and my finishing stones or strops, and between my finisher and my hanging strop, I even wipe between the linen and the leather even though my linen isn't treated.

In order it goes like this: 1" very soft linen, 2-1/2" TM's Genuine Linen, TM's 2-1/2" Red Latigo, then finish with TM's 2-1/2" #1 Horsehide

I don't know man - two linens followed by two leathers? You're pushing the boundary there :p

If you start feeling the need to switch the lights on and off 20 times between passes, then you should worry I think. ;)

Then you really shouldn't be playing with anything sharper than a crayon!:D

Well, whatever,.................things are workin' very well at this point and I'm gonna just keep on doin' what I've been doin'. :w

I might be wrong, but I haven't worried too much about cleaning the blade off between hones. I give it a quick wipe with a microfiber cloth, but that's mainly so I can visually inspect it without water droplets in the way.

When I use pyramids on a Norton, I don't worry about cleaning the blade between sides. :shrug:

As long as you're careful, cleaning the blade can't hurt, I guess. Not sure how necessary it is, though. :)
