    Default Microscope Edges

    Hey,

Picked up a cheap microscope/jewlers loupe, one of those cheap LED ones

    Kinda like this

Anyway, so got it to check out my honing, see what was actually going on, it was only 10 dolars or so, so figured nothing to loose,

I also figured 'i wonder if it would work if i put my webcam up to it'

Sure enough, it worked 'okish' its really fiddly at the moment, but it kinda works

Some interesting results, i have a cheap diamond 1k, a norton 4k/8k and nothing higher, I've honed a few razors and all appear quite different under the microscope

This one is my crown and sword, its not a terrible shave, but not my best

This is my harmonie, probably my 2nd best shaver, for sharpness/smoothness

This is my newly restored bengell, i'd say it gives me my best shave

This is a dovo that i got pro honed by a guy here in Adelaide, it shaves, but it doesn't seem to do as good-a-job as the others.

Lucky last, this is one im restoring, haven't touched the edge yet.

All quite different finishes, but as far as when i'm doing it, i follow all the same steps, but all have come out different. Is this the steel? or my technique?

Kinda embaressed to post this as to how bad some of the edges look and to think i'm using them to shave

That is really neat! Thanks for the pics of the edges. I don't have one of those and I really ought to get one. I do have a 30x old binocular microscope and it gets me by. Isn't it amazing what you can shave with? Before I looked at the edges under magnification I was in the dark as it were.

So the 2 metal parts in the pics are the blade and the edge?

What software are you using to capture the video image?

I'm just using photoshop, has an import feature

it was actually taken at 100x magnification apparently, but i think there might be issues with the webcam focus etc, because it seems closer if i look with the naked eye

So the 2 metal parts in the pics are the blade and the edge?
    Yeah

Hi, Did you put the razor between the foot and the microscope, or under the foot, with the razor between the foot and the table?

    Razor goes under the foot.

    Default magnification pictures

I know I have come across an excellent resource of magnified straight edges with headings such as over-honed, chipped, shave ready, etc.

I have searched for this here and have not been able to find it. I would appreciate the help in finding the link.

    Appreciate any help,

    david
