Talked to toishi.jp, they say their Otaniyama asagi kamisori should be used with slurry at all times, nagura or wa-powder.
Nakayama mine is harder to email....
In Japan the norm is to use the stones with slurry but that doe snot mean that is how a stone should be used always.Quote:

I'll keep using them the only way I've found will get a nice edge, with slurry, however thin but they seem to need it.
Some kiitas I've got works fine with water only but they don't come close to the asagis.
Will try and get a Nakayama kiita kamisori in the future and compare them.
I'm no expert at all and I only have one JNAT, a shoubudani and when used with water only it behaves that way, it drags and jumps and is very uncomfortable to hone on. I don't know if it hurts the edge though cause I never use it that way.
Just a very light slurry that can hardly be seen and this stone is the easiest stone I have and gives me very sharp and smooth edges.
If that's the way my stone works best I'm happy to use it like that.
