Ebay swaty
Just won a Franz Swaty for 99cents. The picture wasn't the greatest but I thought a dollar was worth the risk. Funny it was labeled swarty. So I don't think anyone saw it. Now comes the waiting game.

That is funny, do a completed items search for Swaty and some go for $50 while others for $10 and everything in between. I've never seen one go for $0.99 before, and looks pristine ........ ya did good !

Wellll it already arrived in a timely fashion and I'm stoked. This is my first step into honing of any kind and I'm just looking to touch up my razors when needed.
Couple questions though. What should I do before first use (I read some where about not lapping an old swaty) should I clean the surface with something? Also, any idea how old this one is. It says "WAHRING bei WIEN" on it.

WAHRING bei WIEN, German. WAHRING in VIENNA. My google translator didn't translate Wahring. Might mean Made in Vienna. Check in SRP wiki and search for old thread about the Swaty hone. Yours might need some kind of surfacing or cleaning before it should be used. You were lucky. Mine cost considerably more. It is not a finishing hone. Its purpose is for touch up when the razor stops felling like you are getting a good shave from it. Some people say they can go years between major honings by just doing a touch up on a barber's hone when needed.

There are at least a couple of threads about Swaty and the company history. Here's one:

From what I recall from my own attempts to piece together Swaty history (and I'm an historian for cryin' out loud!) I feel I should warn you that you may not find definite answers.
However it's an interesting story.
Wahring is (I think - again, it has been a while since I read up on Swaty) either in or near Vienna. The company also made hones in Marburg/Maribor (Marburg for the time it was in Austria, Maribor when it's in Slovenia... did I mention this could get confusing?).
Bottom line though: that should be a good hone and one heck of a deal!
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.
