May be at 1/2 I'd bite! Does sound well honed.
I could not tell you if is from a GD or not. The seller that I know of who remakes gold dollars is vorpal. His work is very good
and his razors arrive with a superb edge. This one you are looking at does not look like his work to me.
You can always ask the seller the question as to whether the razor is a modified GD.
I would be less than inclined to buy anything from someone who thinks a plain old yellow lake oilstone is anywhere near a 15k hone...
Regards,
Neil
$120 for a $3 razor? No thanks.
That thing is just janky
I sort of like the scales, from the bit I could see, not fussed either way with the spine, the tang looks strange to say the least, and the engraving is really not very good at all. If you are going to engrave your initials then use a template or something. That's my opinion anyway.
Are you sure GD even makes a 7/8"?
Would this one be a GD 208???
GD 200 208 100 and 66 are 6/8, the 800 is I believe 7/8 and supposed to be stainless. Theres a few others out there made in china for others like the bakkus, the titan as well as others. Supposed to be vg10 steel.
GDs are typically 13/16ths, maybe they are being a little generous with the 7/8ths measurement. Very nice pictures, one of the grind would be a tell if it's a GD or not.
Can't see it...next time copy and paste the pictures from the listing, otherwise the link won't work after so long.
I can still see it but here's a pic of it;

Hmmmmm
Beauty should follow function, this is one principle that should always be kept in mind when doing custom work..
Not really so sure of the functionality of the cuts into the side of the spine,,
In your opinion (without actually honing it, of course) could those cuts become problematic during honing - perhaps catching on the side of the stone or causing the blade to come of the stone since there is a moment when there is no contact between the spine and the stone at the edge of the stone?
Also, is there any function to any spine work, or is it all just decoration? The only thing I can think of is making the blade lighter, if that is a concern/goal of yours.
thanks a lot
I was more concerned for my strops, that was my first thought, but yes the second thought was IF you honed without tape, which I don't, but it could be an issue for those that do hone without tape... I guess the only way to really know is to do it and see...
The double thumb notches and the corners there also don't look all that comfortable for stropping but again I would have to try it to see..
The thing with "custom" is that most if not all good designs are already made, to make something new you get... well, something new!
You see it everything these days, "new and improved".
I was shown a razor with a fairly heavily worked spine. But I was a proper custom ie made from scratch, so the maker was able to put a flat honing / stropping spine edge lower than all the working.
If you imagine a wide smiling razor with a normal spine, then imagine a worked section that is narrower on the back of the spine.
Sorry poor description. But it looked good.
The guy who owns it may help out wth some pics if he reads this.
Then the back work... I can't say it's new and wrong, I've got plenty of old razors with fancy worked backs that's not very nice to my strops... don't know how they thought they would work but they sure looks good!
