I've been watching this one to see how far it would go. I know what something is worth is what someone will pay but sometimes I wonder. eBay no. 201054008239 is over 400.00 now and I believe will hit 500. thought ya'll would like to see it.

Brings up a Micky Mantle baseball card. Bid up to 355.00! :D
201054008239 try mine
I'm a big fan of W&B's, but that's basically an everyday, run of the mill W&B, hugely over priced in my opinion. But the market bears what it will. It's not even a Celebrated Hollow Ground, or an FBU. Here's one I got for half that price, it's also a 7/8:

id much rather have yours, its beautiful! the one in the listing has been reground, very well I might add, but his razors almost always go higher than the majority of the market for some reason. I believe its Cedrick? from coticule.be, must have a sizeable following. I bid on his items from time to time and have never won once!
Hey - he always has some gorgeous blades, really like the stuff he does, no question about it. And this one looks pretty NOS, so that may get the price it's going for, it does look awesome.
He restores them and posts them for sale, all the more power to him! The market pays what the market pays...I wish him, like every seller, the best return in a fair market.
But then again, I've bought blades here that others paid a third the price for several years ago, so I'm just as guilty...the market it the market!
Hey Phrank, not to get the thread to far off topic but you seem like a well informed W&B man. In one of the posts above you alluded to a order of preference for different models of W&B. What is the general rarity/desirability of the models? I have a few in line to clean up, but would like to know more. TIA
Bear in mind, my preferences are mine, and everyone has there own favorites, both in models and grinds....but my Holy Grail, aside from some W&B specials, is a spike point, 9/8 or above, Hollow Ground, For Barbers Use...I have one like that, and three others the same with the notches, not my favorites, but gorgeous blades nonetheless.
I find some of his restorations to be very sterile. He does make a hell of a lavender box though. His restoration of a Maher & Grosh that I saw awhile back made me think he is into the Black Arts as he reproduced the engraving on the blade after regrinding it to make it look like it was made about a month ago. At some point vintage is not vintage.
haha, I know exactly the m & g you're talking about, and I feel the same way. Im pretty sure he had written articles on the subject of etching, replicating texhniques used by the forefathers of razordom, I just couldn't find them last time I looked. i think his restores are top notch and its good he has a market for people willing to pay for his talent. should be listed as restored though in my opinion, some may be looking at them and thinking they are untouched, nos, and knowing how high people pay for nos they go higher than otherwise.
The razor has 100 bids on it .....Nothing like a good bidding war huh? One guy has 0 (zero!)
transactions. Hmmmmmm.
It really can't be worth that much this is crazy. I will be watching.
I have seen a lot of these razors, which when you look and read the description, appear to be pristine examples of old blades. By not telling people that these have actually been reground and restored, to me it is perpetrating a deception at the least, and by some definitions would count as out right fraud.
Just my opinion, take it for what its worth.
seriously $725USD with 1 hour to go, damn this makes my $75 1" W&B score look so much better LOL
That's what I'm saying. I'd wait, but if someone has the $$$ to burn...
At the price it looks to be sold at I would want it delivered on a pillow, in a Rolls Royce, with a man servant to shave me every morning for a year included (along with a vintage bottle of champagne, small toasted rounds of rye bread and Beluga caviar).
unbelievable. $1,125.
Unreal I guess the days of the $100 w&b are gone. Rad to the 10th power.
I sold for WHAT ??? yep you could buy 2 women for that much, pillow included.
Wait a minute I have 3 of those, got to go copy/paste that sales pitch and do some postin' brb :<0)
If you look at the amount of bids and the bidding history, just seems so bizarre. One bidder bid up in $1-2 increments about 40 times.
If he put it up for sale right now I'd bet he would not get back 1/3rd of that.
I just buried my Razor addiction because I'm afraid ALL the prices will now go sky high and I could barely afford what I have bought.
Well folks I was wrong. that razor didn't go for more that 500.00 it actually went for 1125.00 DOLLARS:bow my hats off to the guy that bought it. kind of makes me want to sell out and grow a beard . oh it's the one at the beginning of this post. Who knew
Goodness, a quick browse through the seller's completed listings, and the bid history on those listings, is very interesting indeed.
Yeah the bidding is very strange, I'd stay out of any auction with such activity.
Why? What if somebody spends few thousand dollars on a razor, they could shave with it or not, it has no bearing on me.
I have a fairly large collection so I could chose to shave with a $20 razor or a $1000 one, or anything in between but I wouldn't let some silliness on ebay determine what I do in my bathroom :)
It's not a competitive sport for me, but rather a hobby that I enjoy and I intend to continue doing so :)
The ones I've seen of yours Phrank are nicer than that one and it sold for over1100
Crazy. Tc
I lost on a W&B tonight...had to drive, and would be on the road when the auction was ending, so put in an auto-bid that I thought was way higher than anyone would go....lost it by $5.00...but I've learned, there's always another...quite a nice blade though, congrats to whoever got it.
Thanks! The market is, what the market is.
Here's a W&B I got awhile back, it had Camacho wooden cigar scales on it (still have the scales), didn't like them. Felt they didn't suit the W&B...anyhow, picked this blade up for BIN $70.00 a couple of months ago...had it re-scaled in black horn, just got the pics tonight, and this is it finished up:

Edited to add:
Found the pic of the WB when I first got it, check out the radical scales!

Personally, I'm pretty glad that there are so many folks fixated on Wade & Butcher razors. Apart from Wostenholms, they're the most common 19th century razors you can find in America.
That means the really interesting stuff flies under the radar.
:)
you guys make me feel like I shouldn't have bought it, now I feel silly..........
