By "this", I mean all the vendors who photograph razors artistically posed with their delicate edges propped up on hones, geodes, granite counter tops, and other similarly unyielding and/or abrasive materials.
It makes me want to scream!

Hopefully, they are as proficient with their hones as they are with their cameras.
I remember one guy who posted a photo of the razor cutting a piece of note paper to demonstrate the keeness. That sort of flipped my gut. :ziplip:
No that's a manly razor,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,:rofl2:
It bugs me! Esp as on the edge of a hone! I always say "GET THAT OFF THERE!" out loud and my wife comes running in! :D
I get frustrated by backgrounds, white backgrounds make it hard to see details as the blade sort of blends in, and patterned backgrounds make detail hard to see as well, i dont know what is best but i would have thought a plain matte mid shade colour like blue would work well
I'm keeping my mouth shut on this one.
You must avoid SOFTD then ?
This should push you over the edge then :<0)
It's not honed yet and, no cheese was harmed in the shot.

This happens when you come in from the shop hungry.
I won't be avoiding SOTD. I'm just trying to not comment on other people's comments on the photography shown, which ranges from horrendous (mine included) to decent (a few of mine) to inventive (which is why I wrote what I did) to magnificent (I'm working on that).
Uuuhhhh I meant the OP.... I had a feeling I knew why you were biting your tongue :<0)
I like all pics myself. The crappy ones is where I get my deals and the purdy ones are just that. Photgraphy is an art form with expression just like custom razors. Just because I wouldn't buy it or use it doesn't mean I don't appreciate the perspective of the artist. To each his own !
Well the OP did say vendors selling . Mine took a little imagination as you have to picture the blade going through the salami and hitting ths cutting board. When I see a blade resting edge down on a hone or other such hard object I think "so much for shave ready". I am no photographer but when I take a pic I try to show as much as I can and hide nothing. If the vendor is not showing a clear view of the razor maybe it is good to ask question and about return policy. Does it really bug me ? nope.
My bad. Mea Culpa. (a Catholic ex taught me that one.)
Yes, it does drive me crazy and I swear I've seen this done in SOTD pics. If not there then elsewhere on this site(classifieds). I always think something like: "that's crazy! He knows better than that. I can't believe he did that."
I started this thread while I was browsing eBay, and saw razors from three different sellers...all pictured with the cutting edges against the edge of a hone, and on a lovely geode. This had nothing to do with SOTD or the classifieds.
I'm not implying that you were talking about sotd or classifieds. Simply saying that I have seen it on this site. I will say that I've never seen an sotd thread with a blade resting on a geode. I do think I saw the eBay ad you are speaking of. There were pics in the classifieds this morning with edge of a razor resting directly on a bladebox. I know it isnt a stone but I wouldn't do it and I don't think you guys would either.
I don't recall if the pics that think I've seen on sotd were yours or not Bob. If they were I obviously didn't appreciate the delicacy of your bevel placement.
Got it now, 'Bruce' in the Aussie threads, 'Tom' everywhere else. That is one thing we do well down here, take your name without consent and shorten it, add a 'Y' or 'O' to the end of it and in some cases just give you a brand new one. All terms of endearment of course, although I must admit I am surprised you didn't get 'Tommo' :rofl2:
I was a photographer - white backgrounds do make the subject stand out, but you get light-creep at the edges that masks fine detail - a thin haired blond against a white background that is softly lit can appear to have nearly no hair at the crown because of this.
The most faithful rendition is given by an 18 per cent grey background, but seeing as most people never check the luminosity or colour balance of their monitors, that is a moot point..
Regards,
Neil
Do you think that would have much of a detrimental effect on razor photography?
As long as we're discussing photographic faux pas, here are a few other things that bug me:
- Weird angles - Because the distortion they cause makes it difficult to judge geometry; low angle, end-on shots are particularly bad!
- Background that aren't flat - Same as above. I've seen photos where the background hid a frown, or even have the illusion of one
- Incorrect white balance - This screws up color reproduction, and so mostly impacts scales. Usually the problem is due to shooting under incandescent lights with the camera set for daylight
I'm not saying that everyone should be shooting pro quality shots...I'm an amateur, too!
Hey, they're selling them. They aren't going to be using them. They don't care anymore. You buy it and it's your problem.
Are you talking about washout? Like this?:D

Of course, if you are HOPING to hide a defect or flaw, bad photography is good photography
