Stay away. Don't see how that blade will end upp any good. Don't understand what thay bid on. the only thing worth something can be the scales and the box.
I wouldn't spend any money on a cracked blade like the but if I had it in hand I guess I'd have the part from heel to crack ground away to make it usable(maybe a regrind too to remove the wide bevel and honewear) and the scales look like they'd look great after a soak in neatsfoot and a light sand and buff.
Yea, you could probably cut the blade off at the crack and make a W&B soup spoon out of it. Kind of a cute description too "IF YOU LOOK CLOSE THERE IS A VERY SLIGHT LINE IN THE BLADE. AS YOU SEE IT CONDITION." A very subtle way of saying crack and that he said it was there.

For free only. Not worth it unless you want to hang it on the wall.
I can spend that kind of money on something else that won't have me stressed, like a big hunk of burl. That would make me smile. :)
It looks like you would lose 1/4 of the length, then have to regrind the transition to the spine to get something that didnt look like a home repair, but it would still have a fair bit of wear on the spine.
But on the bright side if you spent the money on that you wouldnt own 5 1/3 of these Wild Turkey Straight Razor PK 855 YL | eBay
:)
thank you... I'm new to the hobby... still couldn't wrap my mind around why someone wanna bid on this...
Sergeant,
The name Wade & Butcher will make people do strange things. It's the perfect example of hype and fashion. There are razors from the same era that are just as good and if not better than Wade & Butcher, but for various reasons the name promotes tunnel vision.
Don't get me wrong. I have a pair of matching Wade & Butchers in ivory and love them. I have had others and loved them, too. Yet, I have had other Sheffield razors as well — Frederick Finney, Frederick Reynolds, George Packwood, and so on — that also have been gilded razors, although somewhat overshadowed by Wade & Butcher. That's reality.
Why anyone would bid on this particular blade comes in two answers: 1) The buyer is a master restorer and, perhaps, has a magical way of making a new razor out of it, and 2) the bidder knows nothing about straight razors and is bidding on the strength of the name.
Seeing the razor, I frown, scratch my head and shuffle away to a better neighborhood.
I saw that one and as soon as the crack became apparent I left it on the table for some poor sucker to snatch up. Obie, I don't think even a master restorer would touch that one for the price it went for, the blade is worthless and it would only be good for salvaging the scales and washers.
guitstick,
Right you are, unless, as I noted, the restorer has magical powers. Even so, I think he needs magic powers on steroids to do something with that blade. Oy! Upon examining the photo further, the crack in the blade is even longer and more severe that I first thought. Obviously, someone bought the beast, and for that price.
A while back, an antique store owner try to sell me a Sheffield razor for a considerable sum — with half the blade broken off. "You are joking," I said. "This thing's worthless for shaving." He shrugged and said, "It's an antique and and you can put it on display in your house."
Touche. I give up.
There can be a fine line between Antique and Junk. There are dealers that will put anything in their display case with the moniker "Antique" on it even tho it is "Junk" and then there are those that will buy that "Junk" because it is "Antique" in their minds. My wife on the other hand says that all of my "Antiques" are "Junk":gaah:
That big old cracked puppy would be GREAT for a center clanger in a set of razor wind chimes! Just saying

I'd whip out my atomic hydrogen torch and then my deck sander and I'd have that looking and shaving like new in a Jiffy.
Oh yeah....the clock! ;)

Ohh man these are some serious clocks
I've seen a couple of dogs like this and written to the seller hoping he would or rather have to post the question....apparently they do not.....to bad. I'm not in favor of taking advantage of the low information buyer...I've been one and have some compassion for them.
I have zero Compassion for buyers that buy this crap.
Let me put it this way,I have Zero compassion for the non-SRP members that buy this crap.
But,you have newb SRP members that buy the same crap, you see it every day.
I feel bad for them,Than again they have resources (Mentors) they can call upon, most never do.
Is a macho thing to buy your first blade I think, balls to the wall:(
I guess some of the members have access of the activities/purchases of other members....must be kind of exhausting to keep track of 39,865 members to know who are making poor decisions. Adios amigo Sharptonn.
So Tom, this one has been bothering me for awhile so, I'll clarify even though it is truly water under the bridge....when you say in post #23 that SOME members keep buying CRAP and do not learn, this just seems a little omniscient on your part. The number I am quoting 39,865 members is pointing this out.....although it is most likely that one is a member for life even if they have not posted in years. So you are sounding like you know a group of current members who have not, or cannot, make informed decisions about their purchases. Maybe they are either poor and filled with magical thinking or mentally deficient. Any less confusing? Probably not.
Hmmm. Still confused, Bill. I have reread this thread to see what you are in reference to. If I may, in post 20, you admitted to once having been without good judgement and feel for those who do same. I take this to mean you learned from your mistakes.
In post 23, I admitted I have done same and actually figured out loud that all of us who are human have done same and have learned from it....or not. Agreeing with Pixel in post 21 and 24, I also stated I have no compassion for those who will not learn.
As Pixel's advise in post 24 is recollected, all the resources and help is readily available here.
The statements made by many here were a discussion. No one said anything about anyone being poor. Nor 'filled with magical thinking' and certainly not 'mentally deficient'. These are your words from the post #28 above.
Yes this statement is still confusing to me:
"I guess some of the members have access of the activities/purchases of other members....must be kind of exhausting to keep track of 39,865 members to know who are making poor decisions. Adios amigo Sharptonn."
Certainly I have better things to do than concern myself with who buys what, junk included. I do appreciate new aquisitions from the members here. A spade is a spade, Bill. My job as a mentor would mean my best interests are served by helping guys to make wise decisions. I do not gloat as someone does not, but compassion is reserved for those who deserve it. If you took some sort of exception to anything I said, I am sorry that you did. Not sorry for anything I said, though.
As-stated, Quite confusing!

What's Tom on about, Ed? Confused....
Who bought ed a dictionary?
Actually, I'm going to save my pennies and buy a Pictionary. That way I can communicate in pictures and save brain energy because a picture is worth 10,00 words by ed or Neil.:)
