Well not Ebay, will delete if inappropriate, but still had to share. Vendor sold this as Iwasaki Tamahagane Western Straight. He also made a video about it on YT. When I commented that it's not a tamahagane razor and it's missing the serial number etc I was blocked :)

To me, that indicates they are knowingly misrepresenting the item... and after your attempt to inform them, 100% intentional deception.
Generally, the innocent have nothing to hide, and thus will communicate openly. Blocking you is an admission of guilt. I'd "go over their head" and report the listing/seller to eBay. You did message them through the eBay platform, right? There'd be a trail.
Anyone who would block you is noone who you would want to deal with anyway.
It IS an Iwasaki, but a late Swedish steel one.
He advertised it as something which it is not. Pointing it out was a fair thing to do.
Was he asking the big money?
I don't know much about Japanese blades, but Tamahagane will bring a few times more than other steel, correct?
Sellers tend to ask more in the West for tamehagane, whether they get much more is a valid question. Except for the Iwasaki tamehagane, Iwasaki is a collectible brand. But the razor needs to be in excellent condition. I've seen badly worn Iwasakis at high prices and they move slowly. Razors that use/advertise as tamehagane steel tend to be upscale brands, so that may contribute to part of the premium.
That said, the going rate for a NOS desirable model Iwasaki tamehagane Western (folder) is somewhere around $3,000, the most expensive razor that I know of barring historic scales/provenance.
Cheers, Steve
Steve, is there a universal kanji/symbol for tamehagane which would be on items made from it?
