Here is an example of how different a razor can look with modification. This is a pre-Sheaf Works Greaves (probably 1810-25 or so) that at some point was reground drastically and rescaled. Now it looks like a typical 20th century hollow ground production razor. Found on ebay.

I saw that also and did a double take when I looked at the razor. Sure didn't look like any of the Greaves I have or have seen not even the Greaves/Erye from later on. Thanks for posting.

I understand why some razors get reground, that is one extreme regrind. I wonder is perhaps it was reground more than once. I also older how big it was to start with.

I like the old regrinds if done properly. Seems whoever did this one was quite accomplished.

Indeed! I'd wager sometime in the early 1900s this was reground, the owner probably took their beat old shaver and wanted it to look like the in-style modern razors.Quote:

Depends how you define old... razor (re)grinding has been a business since as long as razors were in popular use, and I would venture that regrinding has been going on more or less continuously (and with varied skill), but the amount of regrindings taking place fluctuates, especially with the decline and recent resurgence in popularity of straights. Highly hollow grinds became popular in the late 1800s, initially a lot of the talent was centered in Germany and Sheffield was a bit lagged to catch up. I imagine that's when a lot of older razors were ground to a more modern hollow.Quote:

It IS quite interesting that razors which were reground a century ago (Presumably like the one in the OP) and still have little honewear since the regrind, seem fairly common still. I think they were easier to hone and maintain and then were used somewhat until Gillette and war broke out. I think being reground turns off some.
