Hey guys, I dont know much, but this one is catching a bunch of bids. Any idea of who the maker was? I must defer to the professionals.

Those scales will always attract a lot of attention.
Here it is really stupid to show an ongoing auction.
Gives them to the guys with money.
Don't!!;

27 bids...24 bucks! :rofl2:
Beautiful looking razor. Love the scales and blade. I'm certain I saw this one selling a couple weeks back tho. The scale/blade is unique so it stands out to me. Just something to think about. Maybe it's still the same auction?
Yeah, those penned scales are scarce these days. Too bad it is badly cracked on the show side.
Seems Neil Miller related that they had young girls doing that job.
They had the sharpest eyes.

That was once a nice razor. I don’t know that it will go for too much though. It looks like it’s been reground pretty thin with some deep pitting on the blade and some rust on the edge. The scales are nice and could clean up well with some TLC.
Also. I’ve got to agree with Richard. Many of us spend a lot of time scouring eBay for nice razors. If I had my eye on that one, I would be pretty annoyed if it was advertised on SRP.
Yes and thanks! I bought them back when Ebay was fairly new. Supposedly they came from a museum in Massachusetts.
The top blade is from George Hammond with a WR mark.
I speculate the other got broken and was replaced with a modified blade from what seems to be A. Overrall of Dublin. Pretty good match!

Done long, long ago. I have nicer ones with penning, including a few in ivory.
These? I have simply left them alone. They sleep in the box.
Fun to look at!
Oddly enough, the razor linked-to by the OP is from George Hammond as well.
For posterity...

Why not discuss a good auction? We all check ebay. It’s a free market economy, prices rise and fall with demand. Am I missing a rule that says good auctions can’t be discussed?
They will explain! ;)
BTW, same seller of the silver scales linked-to earlier, last week or so.
They have become proud of those! :rofl2:
Nothing wrong with it, but surely will drive up exposure and price by doing so.
If it's one you really want, you are increasing your competition by sharing direct links is what Geezer was eluding too, I think..
:beer1:
Nice project that would be, btw.
Hope the winner does it justice.
I just figure that the free exchange of information trumps an individuals unknown and hypothetical interest in a publicly advertised item on the biggest auction site in the world.
See? Now my head is spinning...Thanks Mr Z!
I could buy that and put the Hammond blade in the scales which have the Irish blade in them. While the front scale is cracked, hopefully the back scale is intact and I can replace the back scale on the one in question with that as it has a chunk off the top back there.
So then, I restore both razors and work my ass off .
Send the Irish up to B52........
What to do? Now everyone will know I want it so the bidding will go through the roof on ancient junk. The blades are lots different anyway. Yeah...Status Quo...
Thanks MrZ! :rofl2:
All I heard was Irish blade, and b52,,, :p :p
On a different note, that scale design would be a great replication project.
And that bellied tang design is one of my favorites..
Gonna be a war Texan..
:jedi:
It's been reground way thinner than either of mine. Note double-stabilizer! Double-thumb-notch?
Also, My Hammond does not proclaim 'patent temper' on the tang. This one is from an earlier batch? Seems both are WR's?
The back scale on it will do me no good. Ck the contours.....??
But it is I who possesses the Dublin blade. Arrrrr!
Whatsay ye now, Michael?
NOW whatya say?:rofl2:
See what you started, MrZ? :roflmao
Ahhh see, I love that double thumb/ thumb finger notch. I have a Joseph Rogers with them. But it cuts into the stamping. So I'm uncertain if it's made that way or if it was worked into it after. Maybe it is authentic, and the stamping was just a standard size and they did not have or make one at the time to fit the narrow tang after the notch in the top and bottom? I just do not know. Looks clean, but still am uncertain.
Sorry should have tagged our original conversation Sharptonn about your twin set. Left the message here for a second and by the time I posted it there's been a bunch of other comments.lol
I got in sh*t for this a couple weeks back.lol I was throwing up ones that were good deals for guys on here to snatch up. The issue there is, after everyone sees them. It will no longer be a 'good deal'. There are many members.... and TONS of guests roaming this sigh all the time. So although the thought was there. It kind of ruins the intent. But yea, it threw me off with the Auctions Forum. But I think it's mostly just to point out the bad ones., or ridiculously priced ones. You can ask questions about one you're interested in, but again risk the attention taking the auction off.
And MrZ....We like to have levity wherever we can. Just having fun! ;)
+1 to that!
:tu
Hummmm i jave one that looks just the same... im almost sure the scales are horn very old... its almost wedge.... but no marks on this one's tang... u guys think its the same manufacturer???

Who knows, Gabe?
Anyhoo.....29 bids and 25 bucks. Big money at work! :D
My opinion... an active auction should not be posted unless its yours.
A buy it now should have no problems.
If your enterested in something and want opinions then dl the pics and post them without links. It might be a little safer that way.
But what do i know.

Also that razor is not 1840s, it is 1830-37 from the King William mark. I don't know where he got that bit about piquee-pinning only lasting from 1840-50. That is... not right. And the escutcheon plate is likely a base metal and not actual silver.
So it's ScienceGuy who is running up the bids!!
;)
It's not against the rules here but it's kind of lousy form... You can ask a lady what she weighs or what her age is, you have freedom of speech here, but do you...
I "think" there is a place.for it on the forum but im not for sure on this.
That is because they bang your shipping fees for the commission as well
60-something bucks. Wow!
Cheaper than I thought actually, given its age and potential, and exposure..
Didn't realize it was a regrind.
