Default Its now costing Even MORE!

As of now, Ebay is collecting sales tax on purchases.

I dont know if its for EVERY state, but here in NY at least, that tax is on the total INCLUDING SHIPPING.
I dont know how the hell its legal to tax shipping charges, but I have seen it in other states as well, on the standard retail sales, I think NJ does that too.
Just one more way they are keeping the poor poor, and themselves well fed
ANyway... if you are bidding on stuff, just keep in mind that you will have to pay that much more at the end of auction.

It’s been happening in Canada for a while. Canadian sellers are supposed to charge Canadian buyers sales tax. Many have not in the past, but the revenue folks are now cracking down on them. Don’t know how it translates to sales crossing the border.

The Australian government has been collecting GST from overseas sellers for a while also. Pretty clever to make someone in another country your tax collector

Yes, that has been happening more frequently of late. When you buy outside Canada CBSA (Canada Customs) may bill you for the Provincial and Federal sales tax when it enters Canada, That is along with any other applicable Tariffs and Duties owing. That has been hit or miss and I guess if the value of the imported goods is less than a certain amount the CBSA do not feel collecting the amount owed is worth the paper work effort to get it. That is only a guess though.

Any sale tax in the country of origin is not charged by the seller as the goods are exported and not sold into the sellers country. So, if you buy from an EU country that country's Value Added Tax (VAT) is not charged to the buyer. It gets confusing because normally the VAT is included in the listed price not added after as is the practice here.

    Yea, it's a right mess.

Here in Illinois, the state has a Use Tax. If you purchase something from another state for use in Illinois, you are supposed to pay Illinois sales tax on the item. If the other state charges sales tax, then you can reduce the amount you owe Illinois by that amount. Since keeping track of every item purchased from out of state is a hassle, I normally just pay an amount estimated using a percentage of my total income.

New York taxes us on everything, and taxes us hard. Its a tough state to want to stay in, but I cant retire from my job yet.

Interesting. I am in Minnesota and just won a razor from NH and some cotis from Maine but so far no tax. I do however have to pay sales tax on Etsy since December, items from NY and Arizona.
Overall bad news, this means taxes on eBay will be here soon.

I'm in the same boat, but I am already planning my escape. Just five more years and I can retire out of state. It is a shame, really, since the Adirondacks are beautiful.
