It's not scarce. It's not rare. It's not very rare. It's not extrememly rare. It is impossible to find in that condition. Compare it to owning one of the guns used in the battle of the Little Big Horn.
Now thats what I call "razor porn"
Nice enough to swipe a pic of :p
Sold for$2,568.00
You're seeing this razor as a razor user. To a razor collector this one is exceptional. Not sure as exceptional as the price indicates, but the blade etching and scales design are highly collectible.
Just for perspective, I've seen old barber shop shave mugs sell at auction for between $5,000.00 - $10,000.00 each. I know for a fact that there is a personalized shave mug that belonged to the famous early 20th century stage magician Harry Keller that if ever sold at auction would probably fetch even more. Not my league either!

Just out of curiosity though as I don't really know that much yet what's the pedigree of this razor. I see that it's quite rare, almost impossibly so. but what are the details on it?
Forgive my ignorance.
Looks like an Egyptian style etching on the blade. I see pyramids and a rider on a camel. Egyptian design became hugely popular following the discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb in 1922.
The scales may also be an Egyptian inspired Art Nouveau design.
Very collectible and desireable to those into that stuff.
Over all a very beautiful straight razor, especially considering it's probable age and nice condition. Probably never, or little, used.

Its probably a one of a kind item or close to it and whoever bought it is probably strictly a razor collector.
Look at the ridiculous bidding history!

A 1700 dollar jump? They sure bid differently from me...
That's a cool razor, I'd probably shell out my max of $50 for that one. I have a funny feeling that the $2,000+ bidders know the history behind it
You wouldn't get the opportunity to shell out $50 for that razor.
I have rarely seen one in such good condition with that much metal sculpture on it. That really is a beatiful razor. $50 is an insult.
I have about 5 really nice nudie razors that I paid well over $100 for, none of them have beautiful blades like the one pictured.
However, it is definitely NOT worth over $2,000. $500 is really more reasonable. These two guys got a little out of control...but they obviously have the money.
On the other hand, it's worth whatever someone will pay for it, I guess...
The only insult here is you applying your own values to what another person should consider bidding on an item and then calling it an insult when it does not meet your criteria. You're doing exactly the same as him just on the other end of the scale. He knows what he would bid and applied his own value to the object and you know what you would bid.
Is it more likely that you would get an item like it than him? -Yes.
Is it entirely impossible that he would? -On ebay yes, IRL no.
This post, if such should be the case, is not intended to be harsh in its tone. However as it can be hard to convey your general demeanor and tone of voice on messageboards I'm adding a smiley to the post in order to delineate its nature.
;)
i think we will be seeing more of these! form our good friends and zeepk! i have oticed that the sometimes try to imitate old and rare etching designs to and value for the "collector" :)
One man's junk, another man's treasure, each insulting the value of the other :)
Hoglahoo's value calculator: (0.5 x S) + (0.1 x P) = V, where S is the razor's shave quality on a scale from 1 to 100, P is the razor's pretty quality on a scale from 1 to 100, and V is total razor value. If I can't shave with it, I probably won't ever pay more than ten dollars for it. That leaves more great deals for you :)
Hoglahoo's investment calculator returns an error when applied to straight razors. Poor hoglahoo will have to simply cough up the museum entrance fee if he ever wants to see beautiful razors like that one in person.
I own "The Fabulous King Tut"Razor, and would not sell it for 5000.00,however my razor was used to shave many famous peple.it has been documented to have shaved the faces of King Tut,Alexander the Great,Jesus, and 11 of the 12 desciples,Abe Lincoln,JFk and many more famous people
I prefer my Kropp! Sorry, I think it's overdone. I like the blade though if it didn't have all that over-the-top embelishment.
