Guesses on an Impulse Buy
So I was surfing ebay, as usual, and came across this: 1800s 7 days of week walnut straight razor box & hones - eBay (item 280322663257 end time Mar-20-09 19:31:25 PDT). First, I thought I'd modify the lower part of the box to hold more razors. Then I noticed one of the stones was a Swaty. I figured that if one was a good stone, maybe the others would be too. Do any of the hone experts have any guesses?

I have no guesses... But I almost did nab that away from you. It was on my watch list. :P

Thanked: 3795Looks like a pretty good impulse! The longest one looks like a good sized coticule, because it appears to have a dark bottom layer. I'd guess the smallest one is a Thuringian (Celebrated Water Hone), given its color and dimensions. The light colored one framed by the putative Thuringian and coticule is also likely to be coticule. I've no idea what the last one is. I think you got your money's worth.
If I'm right, how many do I get?

You're gonna be so happy when you open that box!! Those stones look great, although I can't really identify any of them. Please share more pics of the hones when you get them, thanks! I bought a crappy looking small hone in a Norton box at an antique store for $3.00. Turned out to be worthless, but when I got it home and took it out of the box, there was a perfect and beautiful translucent Arkansas stone underneath it, which I use while travelling for razor touchups.

Thanks for the input, Utopian. I will be sure to post pictures once they arrive, because I'll likely still have no idea what anything that's not a coticule actually is (I have very limited experience when I comes to hones).
In the auction, it says UPS ground shipping will take something like 12 days, but from Delaware to Rochester... that can't be right. I'll be waiting on the edge of my seat all week.

Nice grab and at a bargain price. I've seen Swatys go for that by themselves lately. I hope the others are coticule and thuringan.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

If the box is in good condition, that alone was worth the price. Sure looks like the long stone is a Coticule with a slurry stone.

nice impulse
could be another ceramic stone, you'll have to wait and see, but chances are you got some nice stones in there.
why not ask the seller to do priority or priority flat rate box. will likely be cheaper for them and you'll get it in 2-3 days. usps ground may get in 2-3 days too, but they're usually pretty good with their estimates so wouldn't be surprised if it takes a week.
