I don't see a link so I don't know which Craftsman razor you mean but generally speaking, they're very good shavers.
I'll have to look for the link. It's from that art deco place. I believe it's brand new with tortoise shell scales. Make best offer type of deal with a buy it now of $275. I offered $65 -- declined, haha.
Got it. I was mistaken, it's not brand new but in very good condition. Looks to be outside my dwindling budget at the moment but what do you think it's worth?
SEARS CRAFTSMAN STRAIGHT RAZOR, DECO LOOK, TORTOISE - eBay (item 160289528271 end time Dec-02-08 22:12:13 PST)
man, I put a 70 dollar bid on it and the seller rejected it. This has been listed and relisted for MONTHS, and nobody has bit. He wants too damn much IMHO.
I dont know anything about the craftsmen but I think a couple of members here have them and i am sure will chime in ...
as far as that seller I see him buying as much as he is selling. I think he may be buying them and restoring them and reselling.
Ebay is blocked at work, so I can't view the razor. I will say that I have seen at least one Craftsman razor that was exactly the same as an Ern Crown and Sword I once owned. Sears didn't make razors, but rather outsourced the manufacture just as they do with many items today. If this one was made by Ern, it will be a quality razor.
I got my Electric Cutlery straight from this seller. It was in very nice shape. I didn't, however buy it for one of his inflated 'Buy it Now' prices. Always look really close at his pics, not all of his razors are in top shape.
If you want a Craftsman, look no further than the Classifieds!
11/16 Craftsman - Imperial - Straight Razor Place Classifieds
I do believe there were some quality Craftsman razors. I've seen a bunch made by ERN, and there's the one my Imperial in the classifieds. They do seem to typically sell in the upper-mid price range. But those Ebay stores... they seem to want too much for everything. I guess that's just the way it is with stores in general (for the most part).
Here is one that recently finished on ebay. I have a half dozen of them. One by Ern and the rest by Koeller I think. All are of a high quality and are as good a shaver as you can get. I have paid $150.00 for a mint NOS piece. Lesser condition will bring a lower price of course.
The seller who is asking $275 is an antique guy who puts a high value on items from the Art Deco period. Note that he includes Art Deco in describing the razors that he places a high price on. He knows very little about razors or wet shaving. His estimate of value is based on the scales. The fancier the higher the price.
He is a re-seller I have bid against this guy on more than one occasion he beat me on this razor at $115 IIRC he buys it and imediatly re-lists them... In the car Biz we call this a "Clip Joint"...... Offer $125 and see what happens the razor is worth that..... I was in on that auction at $114.88
+1 on that they are great shavers.....
Howdy,
$150 for the ebay one if NOS would be an OK price in my opinion. That one is a Koeller (Sta-Sharp Model) and in my opinion again, one of the very best shavers out there. I saw one go for $200 once from a razor collector, but the $150 has been the average for Mint. The one in the Classified's looks like an ERN which also is an excellent shaver.
Good luck.
Lynn
The Sta-Sharps (not marked Craftsman) tend to go for less on ebay, and shave just as good. Maybe even slighly better if you get the Chromized Steel version.
I think the Craftsman branding/etching was a large part of what intrigued me. As well as the scales and overall look of the razor :D. I was just really drawn to that one. I actually offered the $150 that Lynn suggested (and that's over my budget). I guess I'm sort of relieved that offer also got rejected. I really should be saving up for the stones on my list first...
