here's an escher on fleabay. Only 6 days left. :rofl2:
Since learning my ancestors (on my fathers side) came from Thuringia, I have been questing for an Escher (or similar old Thuringian).
This is more of a plea to STAY AWAY, than anything else. Help a brother out! :rolleyes:

Plain old Thuringians go for way less than Eschers. Maybe that'd keep you satisfied for a while? After all, they're basically the same stone as far as i'm aware. Good luck though!
Yeah, but finding an old one is tough. I have this nebulous idea of getting a stone mined from about 100+yrs ago to roughly match the time some long gone family members might have lived there.
Probably pie in the sky, but what the hell...Right? :D
Bid high then buddy. I've got a couple of vintage Thuringians. Haven't dated them, but they're old, so they are out there, & a 5" x 1" stone can be had for very little at the moment.

Well, they might be common on your side of the Atlantic, but not in the U.S. version of ebay. At least, not that I've seen.
I don't dredge through the sharpening stone section but once a week on average though.
Well, if that one finishes after the Escher & you happen to be unlucky, maybe it could be your consolation till you get the expensive brand named one?
You'd offload it in the classifieds no problem. I paid £20 for mine & $20 for the one i got from Kees. The £ was strong then too, so that was pittance!

well there's always the non-shaving folk out there that you need to fight with, and with the ebay encryption of names everybody can stay anonymous and go rogue on you.
But one thing that is for sure is that there will be more eschers and thuringians to come. Prices seem to be going up on average, but there are always the fluctuations. With enough persistance I think you can get one (or more) at pretty much any price point - randy is the living proof :)
That is a nice stone. You may luck out on it. Since the label is gone Escher collectors are unlikely to bid and if they do it won't be as high a bid as it would've been if the labels were in place. :gl:

This would have been something I'd bid for if I hadn't just bought a 5''x2,5'' Escher last week.
There still is not only this expensive Escher in the classifieds section, but this one and two Thuringians too. Well, the second Escher is gone - it's the one I bought on eBay. The starting price was rather high at USD 99,99 (don't low starting bids generally yield higher end prices? wouldn't a reserve be a better way to prevent ridiculously low endings?) but I was quite surprised I turned out to be the only bidder. It was only after recognizing Midstream's signature in our e-mail correspondence about payment and shipping (first mistaking him for Lt.Arclight who uses the same quote) that I found his ad on SRP.Quote:

There is an interesting older thread somewere about this kind of informing about eBay interests here on SRP. Generally speaking, the gentlemanly approach of SRP-members in all sorts of matter strikes me. As for other readers, there's no way of telling. But a little faith is good. You never know mate, & the price that thuringian went for compared to what i paid just goes to show you just need to keep an eye open & you'll get one at the price you want eventually.
I am not going to lose any sleep over this, one way or another. I already have 2 coticules and a Nakayama, so I really don't need a Thuringian.
But needs and wants are two totally different things. ;)
Did you get it? It went pretty cheap compared to what they have been fetching. Maybe your post did have an affect on the good souls here!
Less then half of what I paid of a labeled stone. I believe it was either a light green or a yellow green. Whoever got it has a great razor hone.Quote:

Someone should tell thanoomyint to stop lapping all the sides and removing the corners. These old stones are valuable because they're vintage but he makes them look brand new. Such a waste.
