Escher & Sons
here's an escher on fleabay. Only 6 days left.
Since learning my ancestors (on my fathers side) came from Thuringia, I have been questing for an Escher (or similar old Thuringian).
This is more of a plea to STAY AWAY, than anything else. Help a brother out!
Edit: the link disappeared! Let's try this again.

Plain old Thuringians go for way less than Eschers. Maybe that'd keep you satisfied for a while? After all, they're basically the same stone as far as i'm aware. Good luck though!

Yeah, but finding an old one is tough. I have this nebulous idea of getting a stone mined from about 100+yrs ago to roughly match the time some long gone family members might have lived there.
Probably pie in the sky, but what the hell...Right?

Bid high then buddy. I've got a couple of vintage Thuringians. Haven't dated them, but they're old, so they are out there, & a 5" x 1" stone can be had for very little at the moment.
I've got the exact same as this.
Vintage Thuringian Barbers Water Razor Hone Germany-C18 on eBay, also, Barber Shop Shaving, Vanity Perfume Grooming, Collectables (end time 01-Feb-09 21:30:00 GMT)
It's the third i've seen identical & that's with me rarely looking.
It's a great little stone. It's not mine by the way.

Well, they might be common on your side of the Atlantic, but not in the U.S. version of ebay. At least, not that I've seen.
I don't dredge through the sharpening stone section but once a week on average though.

Well, if that one finishes after the Escher & you happen to be unlucky, maybe it could be your consolation till you get the expensive brand named one?
You'd offload it in the classifieds no problem. I paid £20 for mine & $20 for the one i got from Kees. The £ was strong then too, so that was pittance!

methinks you either don't know how people are, or you really have faith enough to move mountins
How can you date these stones? Unless there's a date on the label/the box or a receipt. For some reason I always think years that are part of a label are a commemoration of past event, not a production date.
And as far as I know all were mined before WW2, including the blocks that Muller cuts into hones these days.
Good luck, I am not bidding - got more than enough of them for now.

More of a social experiment really. Plus, if I didn't post this, and someone here outbid me when they might not have otherwise... well, that would be my own damn fault. Right?

As long as it's not my fault i don't really care whose it is
well there's always the non-shaving folk out there that you need to fight with, and with the ebay encryption of names everybody can stay anonymous and go rogue on you.
But one thing that is for sure is that there will be more eschers and thuringians to come. Prices seem to be going up on average, but there are always the fluctuations. With enough persistance I think you can get one (or more) at pretty much any price point - randy is the living proof

That is a nice stone. You may luck out on it. Since the label is gone Escher collectors are unlikely to bid and if they do it won't be as high a bid as it would've been if the labels were in place.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
