    Default Rules of auction talk/ettiquette

I am wondering what the code of ethics prescribes about asking others not to bid? Like if I were to say, hey, I am going to bid $150 for razor x, please don't bid to save me some money, would that fly or is that just useless?

I have seen a few posts where SRP members have said they would hold off on a razor if they knew another SRP member was bidding on it. I think if someone is offering to hold off bidding to help a friend then thats one thing.

I'm not sure how asking people to hold off bidding sits in the code of ethics however. I suppose it could be construed as an attempt to manipulate the auction and to reduce the final selling price (which impacts the sellers return), so it might not be a good idea. After all, if you were selling you would not want buyers colluding to keep the bid prices down. And there is still the chance that someone else comes in and snaps the razor up because the price is lower than usual..!

It definately represents a bit of a conflict!

    What do other people think?

Personally if I see something I want to bid on, I never say a word to anyone. Don't want all the people on here looking at it as well as the rest of the world!

We actually do it quite often...
The way it works the best is to link the item here in action talk and ask "Politely" if anyone else is going to bid...
Then if somebody responds take it to PM, and what I have done in the past is to simply say "I am planning on sniping at $$$ are you willing to go higher"???
If they are willing to bid higher I back off that way the two of you are not bidding against each other... This obviously works easier if people are using sniper programs...

Now I will say this really only pertains to special razors, linking 20 something razors would probably not be looked upon favorably by the Mgmt...

As you can see by going back through this forum it is a rather rare occurrence because you had to actually ask about it...

This tends to happen more if there were a say DD Reaper or a Puma High Class appearing onto E-bay....

Keep in mind that this only works if everyone plays fair, however when you link the item you also stand the chance of alerting somebody to a nice razor, and they might not want to play the game....and they don't have to...

Oh come off it Glen. if you saw a mint DD Napoleon your not going to say anything about it to anyone and neither would I.

In general my view is it's an auction and the high bidder wins. I would never post a live auction because your just calling attention to it and in the end that might just drive the price higher beyond what you can afford. If someone here requested me or anyone else not to bid on a razor as long as it wasn't one I really wanted I would probably agree to it though.

So in the end its a two sided answer for me and it all depends.

Another +1. If I wanted whatever it was badly enough I would bid against my own mother. YMMV
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

As usual, I'm with Glen on this one. If there is a razor that I know will go high, and I am ready to win it, I would alert people who I know may have interest and tell them I am going to bid to win that one. If another person wants to do the same, I'd tell them how much I'm putting on it and if they want it more I'd back off in case that saves them some money. I would expect that if they didn't want to go as high as me they will also not bid.

Of course, if they don't keep their word, which is sometimes easy to find out, I'll be rather unhappy and it will cost them a lot in the long run.

ByronT got a mint Dorko at a steal price this way and I'm happy for him. I'm not sure if that's helped me much so far, usually somebody else wants the razor more.
