Good one.......:)

Why the hell do people do that? I've made a lot of posts about early bidding, but there are always those who will do it...as soon as one person places a bid that's a little above the other one, there's a strong psychological push to get a bid in and have the item. I noticed with myself that if I bid early and decide I'm not willing to pay more, I will change my mind and be willing to pay more money for a razor if someone outbids me early. Could just be me, but I don't think so, since I see so much BS like this happening on eBay. You'll get one item that goes for 150 bucks because of all the early bidding (and other factors; early bidding's not the only reason), and the exact same thing goes for 80 bucks the next day...
I've had it on my watch list just for entertainment.
"Why the hell do people do that?"
They could be simply as pragmatic as having a max price in mind, willing to stick to it, and wanting to ensure that if that's the top bid by anyone that the first one on the board wins the razor, not the last.
I think in the long run one pays less on average for their ebay blades if they can wait around to bid exclusively in the final minute, but for rarities like this if I were to say $405 was my maximum I'd be glad to throw it out there immediately, assuming the blade would likely never fall below expectations given its extreme rarity.
Human nature being as it is, you're definitely right that most fall victim to emotion.
i've got it on my watch list as well
it's still got 4 days to go and it's already $400
waaaaay too much hone wear at the toe for that price.
I am a sniper who comes in seconds before the end. I may place a token bid in the beginning so that I don't clutter my 'watched items' but I never bid my max until it is closing. I think the psychology of someone like this high bidder is that he will scare off any opposition. If that is his motivation he has me out of the running .... my reaper isn't quite as nice as that one but at $100.00 I am happy with it. :)
Interesting. I can't cast aspersions as I've made my share of fervent bids. These aren't really my cup of tea simply because I like a different style razor but I do like the guarantee that came with each of these reapers: "Unconditionally guaranteed forever . . . "
Now that's confidence in the quality of your product. You just don't see that on many things in this age.
Regards,
EL
Most razors on eBay are selling very high for a while now. I still surf it more for entertainment and habit than anything else. This one is entertaining. While I would not pay the going prices for most razors on eBay there are others that are selling high that I would buy before this one, like the Puma Gold 77 that is currently listed, which is more rare that this one claims to be.
Its crazy. I saw that one a few days ago and I cant believe how high the price has gone..!
I guess the guy really wants that razor..!
Thats going on my watch list, I'm interested to see where it closes.
Over $500 now! I grabbed one of the photos too, just in case anyone is interested.
Also, can anyone say what is the difference between the actual blade in a Lifetime razor and the blade in a similar vintage Special or Gold Edge? I mean, I think it's kind of accepted wisdom that "the Lifetime was the top of the line DD razor", but sometimes that is just marketing bullcrap. I was curious if there was anything at all different about the steel or the grind of the blade. Thanks.
I REALLY like bidding wars.........When I'm the seller!
IME they are a good shaver that honed up quick and easy. Hold an edge well and real sharp comfortable shave. No better than a goldedge or a special though. Here is my hundred dollar investment. Not bragging or complaining ... just got lucky I guess.
Nice looking razor but is it really that rare?
$500..!!
:dropjaw:
I wish I was the seller..! :D
I think the real question is, are the scales of the same quality as the other Dubl Ducks (ie sub modern Pakistani quality standards)?
It really is amazing. I mean, Bresnick also owned Deutsch. Why are the prices for the Hans razors not through the roof? At least they have high quality scales and do not look silly.
:soapbox:
I think the bidding will top out around $950.
This one has the legs.
I know where to set my snipe......

The Wonderedge is a "better" blade, the Lifetime was just that, it carried a "Lifetime" guarantee
It is about 20-25 times more rare then a Wonderedge by watching e-bay... The real difference is that they are much, much, more rare in good shape...
Finding them with straight scales and no rust/pits is very rare, I watch them very closely and have been watching them for about 3 years I have only seen 4 in this good a shape and 1 better...
Are they worth that scratch???? obviously that last two were :)
BTW The Otto's scales are made the same stuff, the real difference is the color of the scales, just that slight difference in the formula keeps them in better shape for a longer time.. But they will warp and twist with the best DD's so will the Brummels given the right coditions...
Rounded tip, warped scales and all.....

I bet you could bid 1000.00 and still not win. Whoever's bidding on it, is a serious hitter, over 600 ebay transactions. He ain't gonna let it get away.....Your better off checking the Antique shops, Estate sales, Flea Markets IMO....
The funny thing about these auctions is that so many people say, "well, it must be worth $600 (or $800 or $1,000) because someone paid that amount. The market has spoken."
But when you think about it, being the winning bidder at one of these auctions means that, by definition, you were willing to pay MORE THAN what "the market" would offer for that item. In other words, it's not like we took a poll of all the people bidding on the Lifetime razor, averaged out the numbers, and found out that virtually everyone agrees that these are worth $450 +/- $30.
Instead, we let the price go up according to whatever the craziest, richest, lunatic DD Lifetime fanatic in the group is willing to pay. That's not the "market" or "consensus" view of the price, that's the price that just ONE PERSON is willing to pay (or more accurately, it's the price that just TWO PEOPLE are willing to pay, since it takes one other person to keep raising the amount).
So do the stupid impulses of one or two people equal a "market" price for an item? I'm not an economist, but I'm inclined to say no. As I've said in other posts, I think this type of pricing fits more into the category of a "fad" rather than a classical economic market.
Applying Econ 101 to E-bay is an exercise in frustration...:)
...or just applying sense. ;)
I think it has been a little more difficult to find good deals lately, although admittedly I haven't been checking often. Seems that the last few times I did a search I've found that the good blades were out of my range and the others had unusually high starting bids with no bidders yet. The abundance of "shave-ready" tags in the description has already been brought up on SRP.
I remember seeing a few Deutsch razors that were rescaled for decent prices, but last I saw the Hans with green scales it went way beyond my range. :(
Right now I've been closer to pulling the trigger on some of the NOS German razors from Revisor. A nice collection of gorgeous razors of various widths and prices.
"There shall be NO common sense in buying razors" :)
That is rule #17 or so in the bylaws of straight razor shaving :rofl2::rofl2::rofl2:
Let me put it this way: I paid USD 100 for a fully restored one. Restored by Max, no less. Which is why I keep telling people that paying hundreds of USD for a razor is something that might make sense in the world of a collector, but will not under any circumstances get you a razor that performs better than one for USD 50-100. And yes, I have shaved with Filarmonicas and Dubl Ducks, and yes, I was underimpressed.
Shame on you for broadcasting this. I never thought I was the only one who knew about and lusted after those razors, but now I can probably say goodbye to that eye candy. Goodbye Goldbug I wanted to buy someday. Or, should I say in the words of my two year old, "Ame on you". Yeah, I think I'll say that one too. Don't worry, I'm not THAT upset about it.

Chris, I've been visiting those razors also. I'd rather buy there than eBay.
Two at the same time OMFG is there a blue moon or is Hell getting cold????
RARE Old DUBL DUCK Lifetime GRIM REAPER Straight Razor - eBay (item 350331031208 end time Mar-30-10 19:04:08 PDT)

I totally dig the scale design - very classy, in a hairpin bend way. Must be the super rare Nrburgring Edition.
How about that leather pouch with 5/8, Lifetime and the ducks impressed into it. That is really cool for the hard core dd collector. I bet this one goes even higher than the last one.
Something I find intriguing is that so many or the NOS razors are 3 and 4/8. Apparently these must have been popular with some segment of the population or they wouldn't have made them. Also the frequency of round points. Sure they shave fine and I suppose they are less threatening to the new shaver than a French or a spike point but they are so blah. :) Some killer razors there though, too bad I've learned some self restraint.
I agree, I hope Revisor is around for a long time to come. To each their own: I would prefer an NOS vintage razor over a new production razor. That's just my personal preference.
I don't know where you stand on your view of vintage razor prices or whether you think they're higher than they should be, etc. IMO alerting the troops to the NOS razors on that site could contribute even if in a small way to driving prices up further (increased demand + finite supply = higher prices). I actually don't think vintage NOS razors are currently overpriced so it's no skin off my back, I'm just sayin.:)

OK, why did the price drop from $500 down to $200 in the last hour??????

Even I might bid on this now! h
If you go to the bid history and scroll down you will see that a bidder with 681 feedback retracted his bid of $505.00 for, he says, wrong bid amount.
Than go to the other Lifetime that is active and check that bid history. The guy with 681 is bidding on that. I guess he decided to go for the one with the leather pouch. All is fair in love and razor collecting. :w
