Wow you were not kidding he has a bunch of them.
to bad he doesn't ship to australia.
yet another CONUS only :(
not that i have the cash for another razor :)
ian
Nice stash he's got, unfortunately all the snipers now know about it.
He uses the one thing I hate about Ebay......Hidden Reserve
It's such a crock
Wow, good find. I wonder why he didn't list them in the "Collectibles" category -- listing them under "Health & Beauty" certainly isn't incorrect, but it misses lots of people (like me) who just search Collectibles. Also, no offense to the seller, but what possible advantage is it to list all of them at the same time? Kind of guarantees that you are not going to get much of a premium for your wares. Anyway, thanks for the head's up.
They all seem to be round point too...most I have seen are square. The first round point I saw was a post by JeffE. I wouldn't mind a round point in my collection . Last thing I need is another razor though.
Well, if you want one, this is definitely the time to get one for cheap. The guy is doing everything possible to guarantee a low price for himself. Not sure why. Even the reserve price is set up wrong. The reserve price feature works when no one knows the reserve price. However, this guy has like 8 or 9 of these auctions ending all at the same time, so it's very easy to see or guess what the approximate reserve price is based on the earlier auctions. Can't imagine that's what the dude had in mind when he listed these.
His lack of current activity leaves me a little apprehensive. Something doesn't feel right. YMMV
Yea, looking at these listings again, you can also see that the photos for each one of the auctions are duplicates of the other. Which is fine, I suppose, for fungible items that have no appreciable variation in appearance. But I'm not sure that applies to these kind of razors.
Also, it looks like the reserve price for the DT#13 is $75. Still I agree with others here -- the whole setup makes me wonder what's going on.
Ugh....so tempting. :banghead:
It may be worth the risk if the price stays low.
Hell, I may take a rip at one just for s***s & giggles...I will post findings if I am successful. I need another razor like a hole in my noggin, but if the price is right... whats the worst thing that can happen??
I just did a web search on the Paypal buyer protection program. Caveat Emptor!
Can you elaborate a little bit more about what you found out. I think it is reasonable that if you know these ads are fraudulent, you should give a heads up. What you stated was kind of vague.
Is there even a tool for searching a specific ebay seller outside of his/her feedback?
I was thinking that the presence of Paypal buyer protection might eliminate the risk of taking a chance on this auction. I now do not think this is the case. Please do not interpret my post as casting anything negative about the seller as I only investigated Paypal claims for refunds. Perhaps paying by another means might provide some protection. Sorry if I was a bit vague.
I ditto this about paypal or ebay buyer protection. It's a joke. Got stiffed on a deal where the package showed on tracking it was delivered to me, but it never reached my house. Post Office said they had a fill in carrier that day and it "may" have gone tothe wrong address, but couldn't help as it showed delivered. After jumping thru every hoop ebay wanted to declined my claim. Fortunately I payed with paypal USING my Credit Card and the CC made good on it refunding me the money. Ebay was a JOKE for the buyer. Just a warning. YMMV
Not sure if this helps anyone, but I sent the seller some detailed questions about the razors and asked if it would be possible to show some additional photos.
I got a pretty general response that he has had these razors in "his collection" for some time and that they are new, in paper and have never been opened.
I know this sheds no new light on this situation, but the seller did respond pretty quickly to my question.
Same here...responded quickly to my question with a vague answer. He just happens to sitting on 30 brand new Filarmonica's from his private collection, blah blah blah...Anyway, the cat seems to be somewhat out of the bag and my dream of buying them all for 75.01 seems to be out the window. Like a good game of poker, it ain't interesting if you know the outcome before you play the hand. Deal me in and we'll see how it shakes out in about 6 hours. Good luck to any other gamblers in the crowd!
Well, good luck. I am still undecided whether I am going to sit down at the table on this one.
I remember a very, very similar post a while back regarding an e-bay razor. I can't find the thread or I would post it. Same story though. Deal seemed too good to be true. Seller seemed suspicious. Turned out the buyer got a great deal and the razor was better than advertised.
Like you said...it's a gamble.

Unfortunately this SOTD post caused me to throw my hat in the ring:
http://straightrazorpalace.com/shave...tml#post664234
Lets see what happens.
I hope I'm wrong, but does anyone else get worried when seeing some of the auctions are being bid up to $150 and over, while others are just sitting there at $75 or even $.01? How about the fact that the same two bidders are involved in bidding up the price on at least two of the razors?
I don't know about you, but this smells a bit like shill bidding to me. I hope we find out that this seller is on the level, but be careful if you're bidding. (And for Pete's sake, bid on the ones that are priced at a penny, not the ones priced at $150 -- as if this needed to be said!)
Okay who all won one?
Well I tried to gamble but got sniped inside 10 seconds.
I got me one....one of the black #14's....now that I look at it more, looks a lot like a Double Arrow....hopefully the counterfeiters aren't in the razor biz now...hehe....I missed a #13 at $76...but I was trying to not be greedy!! Hope I didn't overbid anyone here...and hope I don't have an empty box headed my way!!!
As a general comment on the thread - I'm sort of surprised people are so openly so negative. No one (myself included) has any actual information about the seller beyond the questions that a few members asked. It seems good reputations must be earned, but bad reputations are easily implied...
That is a pretty serious accusation, especially given the actual explanation. It's because of the reserves.
The reserves were very clearly at $75 - a bid under $75 won't raise the visible price, but a bid over $75 will raise it to $75 right away. As for $150, I'd suspect that two people randomly selected the same one to make a single high bid on them.
Given how many times you said you thought the seller was ensuring they would get a low price by listing all the razors at the same time, I'm surprised you think the seller would do something like use shell bidding to drive the price up. Those two actions seem totally at odds with each other.
I put a max bid of $86 on one of the #13's but lost. I put the bid in, went to the gym and when I came back, I found out I lost. Oh well......took a slight gamble.
I'd like to know what the story is with these razors from whoever won.
Point well taken...but for me it was just a little scary given some of what we didn't know. Probably wrong to assume the worst, but you have to admit it's not every day that 30 brand new Filly's pop up on Ebay from out of the clear blue from a seller who has never sold a single straight (that we could see) and didn't offer up a ton of warm fuzzy when asked about additional pix, etc...but like Christian Slater said in True Romance "...if I'm wrong, I swear I'll friggin' apologize"
Dylan, I don't mean to be overly critical. I don't like the fact that the seller is using IDENTICAL photos to sell what are different items in different auctions. At the very minimum, I think eBay rules require that you show photos of the actual item you are selling, not just an example of it, especially when the items are unique like these razors are. On the other hand, the razors could be completely legitimate and, based on the prices, an excellent, once-in-a-blue-moon deal for those who were lucky enough to purchase. I'm skeptical, but as I mentioned, I'd like to hear that someone got a great razor from this guy.
Are you sure the photos are all actually the same? He got the shots with black scales to look, to me, exactly the same as the ones with white scales. It's not much of a leap for me to think that maybe each photo is of a different razor.
I also don't think the razors are unique. They were mass produced and are NOS. Sure, there may be minor differences, but probably not anything that would show up in the photographs - assuming they are in the condition he says they are, which there is no reason to doubt.
I'm fine with skepticism - I'm very skeptical myself. But when I see this thread I don't see skepticism - I see a lot of assumptions being throw out as if they were substantiated.
Here was his reply to me about the pictures of the razors
Dear dllandry10,
I have Multiple Filarmonica's for Sale of the #13
and #14. That is why I used the same picture. On
the 14's I used 2 Different pics, one for the
Ivory and one for the Black. On one of the #13's I
didn't take a pic of the Black one, but I did list
in the description that it was Black and not
Ivory. Hope this helps
good luck to those that won. lets hope they arrive safely and are not fakes. dont forget to post pics :)
Hey, thanks a again! Wasn't it you that started that this whole mess? Actually, was hella fun deciding on which razor I don't need to bid on at a price that I can't say no to. Just an aside... I didn't do the math but it looks like he pulled around $2000 for the lot (sans the scissors). Imagine "offered for your consideration, 18 nos Filarmonica Doble Temple razors #13 & #14 new in box at a starting bid of 99 cents"....lots of good pix, 5 day auction, ending Sunday night at say 8pm EST....ya think the last bid exceeds 4K.
