All but one of my razors I have bought on ebay and did my own restoration. To me as long as the blade is in decent condition I'm good with even broken scales as long as the price is right. Anyone buying on ebay should already know its a buyer beware situation.
On the topic of the scales, That guy may very well think he is doing a great job and may even have guys on a forum like this somewhere encouraging him and telling him he is doing a great job. IT happens, A guy post something ... and you don't want to come right out and tell him, "hey buddy that sucks." I see that very thing happen on the engraving forums all the time.
The guy may not be intentionally putting out a rough product. He may not know any better. I know several guys making decent money as engravers who I wouldn't let touch my gun with a ten foot pole. Yet they think they are good and so do the people buying their work.
Its kinda funny sometimes the way the world works.
Just my 2 cents,
Ray
Quick question. I've only found one place to even purchase pins and washers. Where can I find a more diverse selection? I don't even know how to make an appropriate sized horn set of scales, so the 'bullseye' pins aren't necessarily what I'm looking for.
I agree with you. I assume some people think it's acceptable work or they wouldn't have sold (although who knows, maybe the buyers strip the scales and remake them).
My concern is for those who don't know any better and the simple fact that if you haven't been doing restore or rescale work for a good bit of time, you probably shouldn't be trying to profit from it.
When I see custom scales which I feel are not universally proper for the blade, I force myself to realize that individual tastes are rampant in this. I do not like the looks of lots of products, but folks buy them. My idea is that it must look like a proper razor. If not, it may no longer have a proper blade either. Of course, I am mostly an original fan. Custom shaped scales should be reserved for custom shaped/made blades, IMO
I have only bought non-restored razors of ebay. More than the bad rescale, I'm worried about the buffer ware.
