looks to me like that is a cracked ice style scales which is not mother of pearl. i bet whoever gets it is not going to be such a happy camper with the description :) you will find most of those dubl duks have that cracked ice (white/silver or gold) style of scales.
8/8 mint dubl duck is still a pretty nice and trendy razor so the price was going to be higher then alot of razor. but ya, 405$ is high especially when they found out its not MOP scales!!
should send the guy to bill's special selling instructions page :y

I believe the guy who bought it is aware that the scales are celluloid. It's just the size and rarity, combined with all else, I think. Anyway, I was surprised when it went over 300

Those 8/8s come up every now and then but I've never seen any DD go for that much. You can buy a NOS Wonderedge still sealed in its original packing for over a hundred bucks less.
An NOS 8/8 Wonderedge?
What surprised me the most on this was seeing Manyware on the bidding list @ $300+.
It's probably a pretty rare opportunity, and it is one of the "hip" razors. I do think that it went at a premium, but obviously whoever won wanted the razor badly enough to pay more than what we would expect.
I'm sure whoever bought it will enjoy it, though. I've never given much thought to how much a razor cost me when I was enjoying shaving with it. :) Only when the bill came... oy!
Just out of interest, do you know of anywhere selling NOS Wonderedges? I'd be really interested in picking one up, especially in 7/8 or /8/8.Quote:

I just dont get it...I cant imagine they are THAT good to warrant the price tag, yes I understand the whole emotional attachment, but from a strictly shaving point of view, I just dont get it.
There are also collectors out there who don't even shave with them, but still pony up the bucks.
And people tend to spend more money in the heat of the auction than they would if you just walked up and offered it to them.
Yes JL they are that good ,I have some of them, one I shave with once or twice a month, and they are exceptional shavers . I bought most of mine a long time ago, so didnt pay much for them(one was $55.00 and is still new in the box)
Best Regards Gary
Gary,
So are you saying that if, somehow, you lost all of yours, you would not hesitate to pay $405 now to get one?
I am just asking because as Michael just suggested in another thread, this might be the best indication of value... of course, we have to bear in mind that some people have more resources at their disposal than others, etc.
And, for the record, I love my Goldedge 6/8 and the 7/8 Satinedge gave me some of the best shaves ever. (Currently waiting to receive a Wonderedge) So I do believe that the 8/8 Goldedge might be a truly fab shaver. To think that it cost $55... why did I wait for so long before getting into straights?

Dear Ivo,
I think I would buy one for that price(but it would sting), if I didnt have one in my collection. I guess it all depends on what you like. I recently saw a Wade and Butcher Celebrated(Fredrick Remington Special) sell for 1400.00 to a cowboy collector.I have one of these and would have guessed it was worth maybe 400.00. As with any other collectables they are worth what the market will bear at the time.
I think you are right about some buyers who will pay just about anything if they want an item.Several years ago a Saudi paid 450,000.00 for a Rolex(the watch was worth150.000.00) he said he overpaid because he just liked the way it looked, some months later the watch resold in London for around 135,000.00.I guess he got tired of looking at it.I guess some people (not me)have so much money they dont have to be concerned with sale price
Best regards and happy shaving Gary
Gary - thank you very much for this nice answer!
Cheers
