If I send out a high value item uninsured, and something happens to it, or the buyer claims to have never received it, the seller gets the short end of the stick And sadly, a coticule is a big piece of rock, so shipping will cost significant money even without it. Presumably, for retailers this is less of a problem because the occasional lost package is not a big deal in the whole of things.
Just last weekend I had a potential buyer for a razor who kept trying to negotiating a lower shipping price despite my repeated explanations that I was not going to ship anything in a manner that put the risk on my shoulders. And every time I replied, he sent another message, proposing yet a different option that was cheaper than what I asked. I think the message didn't get through.
