I was browsing the bay and noticed there as a lifetime reaper with bids upwards of $500. Do they know something I don't? I have seen some of these in decent shape go for less than $100. Help me out here, what makes this one that special?

They are a rare razor in excellent or better condition. The pouch with the 'Lifetime' imprinted is even more scarce. Little or no hone wear on that one. Way more than I would be willing to shell out but for some it is worth it I guess.
Were have you seen them for < 100 in decent shape?
The last two I saw on Ebay went for around 100 bucks and they had some cleanup needed but no pitting seen on the pics. Maybe those that have reapers can clue me in on the range they paid, not sure if were supposed to do that or not.
I have been participating in this auction, but I guess I'm gonna give that a rest now ;)
No worries though, there are always others
I didn't mean to discourage anyone, was just wandering if that high of a price is normal. I've only recently become aware of the reapers and seen a few of them at auction in the last few months. None were in that kind of condition but I was trying to figure what the draw was for everyone.
I think Jimmy gave you the answer and condition is key. Condition is the end all and be all for serious collectors. As you yourself admitted none of the $100.00 variety you have seen were in as good a condition. You have to compare apples to apples.

I have never seen a reaper anywhere near $100 that needed a cleanup or a little more work. Usually for that price the scales are toast and/or the blade has very serious issues.
Yeppers,
Reaper scales are Catalin and very susceptible to Cell Rot.. Most have warp
To find a Reaper with bright Yellow scales and no warp is very rare, then comes the normal blade issues for older razors,, Consider that you see about 20 Wonderedge razors to every one Reaper in the wild and you can see how the good ones get up there fast...
Wanna see a nice Reaper ???

That is what a really good one looks like see how the scales are still Light Yellow and haven't started the decay... This razor has not been restored
Dont forget, there was also the DD "Lifetime" which was NOT a reaper. just a more modern "safety" type hair shaper thingy. I see those all the time for under 100 ;)
Just IMHO, and based on only having one ...... they are not better shavers than a dubl duck special #1 or what have you. The one I had was a good shave but the tang was skinny with no jimps, and it had a 5/8 or maybe 11/16 blade. Took a good edge but not better than any other 'good' Solingen razor of that vintage.
I sold mine because I didn't like the skinny tang. It was awkward to hold for my thick fingers. It is a cool looking razor and a collectible. I'm just saying this for all of the guys who haven't had one and want to know what all the excitement is about.

The original Bresnick Lifetime was a precursor to the more well known Reaper. The Vesuvius if I recall correctly.
I've seen good condition Reapers, which are very rare, fetch $600-$700.
This one is over 600 now. I guess I will have to find my own and see what the hype is all about. I have a few other razors on my to do list under that price that will have to come first I guess.
I don't think there is much hype about them as far as how they shave goes. My guess is that they shave as well as any other well made razors that are properly honed. I mean really, my DD Special No1 shaves as well as my DD Goldedge yet if both were in similar condition one would be worth more than the other. The blades for both probably came from the same production source and were worked on by the same people. Sometimes the hype, read high price, has nothing to with how well a blade shaves.

Collecting Reapers are just that, for collectors. The price has more to do with scarcity than unique properties. I don't consider myself a collector. I seek out straight razors to use, and to me this one is overvalued. Having said that, I would dearly love to find one in decent shape at a decent price.
Here is a link to a thread with the razor TBS is referring to, http://straightrazorpalace.com/show-...im-reaper.html
