Yes, I was bidding on, come on guys, for a 6 x 1 1/2 . Early today a 10x2 Escher with sticker was sold for less. You could never have a better edge from a coticule vs Escher. But the remarks from others make us believing those stones are magic. I have one, and is just a better coticule, but 700 better, absolutely no. I hope who get it will enjoy every shave from that stone. For me, what start as a economic shaving mode, 3 years ago, it became a luxury market. 1k razors, 700 coticule and so on.
Looks like the stamp on it is worth quite a lot.
I'm so very glad I never caught the coticule bug. The decimal point on that price is one digit too far to the right as far as I am concerned, but good luck to whoever the lucky winner is.
James.
I had one that was 5x2 1/2 or maybe it was 6", don't recall. Box, everything. I think I sold it for $250 ? Not sure, good stone but nothing to write home about. There is a guy who used to be on this forum but left to start his own. He had a lot of things to say about that specific brand being the best coticule. I never found it so but different strokes for different folks.

The hype is strong with that one, somehow this it like the only one that is in the 15k range etc etc whatever.
I don't want to start some "Coti War" here, but even if that is the "best" coticule brand, the issue still remains for me that you are talking about something I would consider a pre polishing stone.
I guess I am perhaps missing something with regards coticules in general - I've had a few but by no means very many - perhaps I am just ignorant of the kinds of edges they can produce. But as it sits at the moment, whenever I read anything about coticules as a final finisher I just think of that old fairy tale: The Emperor's New Clothes.
James.
Makes me think of PT Barnum, I think it was anyway, something about one born every minute. Couple that with straights being popular now and presto.
Bob
IME there is no way. I haven't tried them all but I've tried a good many. I liked, and still like some, but never found one to come close to that. I think that is pure hype. Not saying someone who says that doesn't believe it ....... just that they are either sadly mistaken or allowing wishful thinking to control their judgment.
At that price, professional honing.... twice a year for OMG I should live that long.
With modern man made hones for a lot less this is almost silly. This cost
covers a full stack of top of the line Shapton GlassHones and they are the expensive ones
out there...
The picture was astounding... it looked three times bigger than it was.
May the new owner enjoy....
yeah i cant belive the price it went for i thought i had it sniped at 225 i put it in and bam it hit 709 i all most droped my phone wow who every one that stone over pay for it . im a stone collector and could not justify to myself that price.
My blue yellow combo sold for 185 on the bay.
I really should start putting some hyperbole in my ads.
I'd like to think whatever the selling price ended up being was more a result of the need for exclusivity, than the belief that the stone is that much more incredible than others. As Jimmy said, he had one. I know of three other guys who had or have one. So there's 4 people across 3 forums? The rarity is what I'm getting at. JMHO.
I have no doubt there's probably a lot of truth in what you say. And if that is what this buyer wanted then they certainly not only got it, but also went a good way to ensuring they stay rare!! At that sort of price I doubt many out there could afford one, let alone want one :D
James.
I hope that it doesn't need lapping. If it does then that little salamander on top of the stone is history.
i was out at $708.99 :)
just a reminder that something is only worth what someone is willing to pay ...
i have 3 coticules coming this week and got the bug bite !!! but it would have to be a huge bug bite to count out that coin !! but then again if i had that kinda play $ id buy a lot of things that most would think is over priced ..lol
I quite like a coticle edge but that price is lunacy.
Too rich for my blood...
Same here Stefan, my Coti with a slurry dilution is a perfect setup for Kamisori, IME it leaves a beautiful soft haze finish that leads into the Nakayama like ya planned it or something :D
I like the Coti for the older softer Sheffields, I think mine gives a nice comfortable smooth edge (note the word mine, it doesn't mean yours will)
Just about anything can become a religion. Faith cannot be argued. Whomever got this stone might just be getting the best shave possible in the universe because like most of us, they can remember what one shave feels like compared with all other shaves. And they have something that you don't have. This is a realm beyond BBS, it is the complete transformation of a face into a baby's butt. It costs to do that. Prove me wrong!
Maybe its laced with gold?
so is stuff like this the reason that everyone here tells us noobs to not shop in auctions until we know what we are doing? :p
A nice looking stone and all, but that is indeed almost ten times more than it's worth. I get the collecting thing, but this is beyond anything like it. Ridiculous. For that price, it better actually be magic.
