They make everywhere look good on TV! You go to the same place and you get a week of rain and then when the weather clears up you end up either sunburnt or in the toilet for most of the second week due to something, you weren't quite sure of the origin of, you ate. :)
The lack of decent tradesmen over here is due to the dearth of apprenticeships which really took hold in the 80s. Academic training is never quite as good as learning a job hands on where you learn little tricks from journeymen that have often been passed down over generations. Not that there isn't a place for both academic and hands on training but the old block or day release seemed to work well enough.
The only drawback I can see in employing a lot of Eastern Europeans is the fact they usually aren't aware of the standards that are required by law over here so some retraining is often required (not that a lot of native tradesmen aren't just as likely to be unaware of a lot of standards or requirements.)
Luckily Poland is a large country so they can, hopefully, cope with the loss of tradesmen and professionals.
