Let some one else hone the razor and then decide if SR shaving is for you, why drop a lot of $ and then find out you dont like this? When properly honed a razor will give many years of good use with only a barbers hone to maintain the edge.

In an ideal world, at least 100. There would be Shaptons, Naniwas, Suehiros, Coticules, BBWs, Jnats, Nortons, DMTs, Eschers and Charnley Forests, to name a few
My go-to setup is the Shapton Glass Stone 1K, 4K, 8K and 16K, works very well, I am in the process of really mastering them. Naniwas will work just as well. To quote the all-mighty Lynn: the Naniwa Super Stones seem to be made for honing razors.
As to the razors you mention, the second one has a pretty sharp point, which will cut you up when you're learning to use a straight razor. I would advise to go with a round point. DOVO and Thiers-Issard are both high-quality brands and any of those will shave wonderfully when properly honed.I want a lather whip

Thanked: 631To be honest I have a Ralf Aust that I got on Straight Razor Designs for around $100 and it is a great razor. I also have a Giesen & Forsthoff that was around the same price that is good also. You don't have to spend a lot to get a good razor. The two above are just as good as my Dovo pearlex.

Heck yes...Puma is an excellent razor.
As for Dovo...The "Best Quality" is an excellent starter razor.
A 3" strop is also a good idea. I have used one the entire time I have been straight razor shaving.
