It's been my experience that the visualisation of "hot knife through butter" or similar is a slight over exaggeration in many cases. It shouldn't be a tug of war by any stretch, but most razors require a bit of momentum let's say to get through tougher areas of beard growth such as the chin and upper lip.
It may be worth considering a "buffing" kind of stroke in these areas - short backward and forward strokes (where the edge doesn't really leave the skin on the backward stroke) can provide just that little bit of movement to help ease the edge through the tougher spots at a controlled angle and rate. It can sometimes be a much safer stroke in these areas than plonking the edge down into thick stubble and then trying to move it through - there can be a tendency for it to "dig in" sometimes, or simply skip.

Somewhat better with momentum but you will lose some feedback as the blade will be very silent. It's a trade off.
