Is it safe to assume that I should not buy this razor?
It has rust on the blade.

Perhaps it could be made into a patch knife.

I would say that unless you want to spend a lot of time and or money to restore it, you should pass on it. Although, if the price is low enough it could be a good project for you.

Hard to say from that image.

If you really like it and want a project and the price is reasonable to you, then roll the dice.

The answer will vary from person to person. Is there any particular reason you want this piece? There are many great razors out there that are ready to go

I saw it on craigs list.
I think the asking price is too expensive, but I could offer less.

It says something like "J.A.MENCKELS" OR HENCKLES, TWIN WORKS, Germany on it.

J.A. Henckels is an outstanding maker. One of Germany's finest. Still, offer low, if you go for it.

That's Henckels. They make very good blades, but as others have said, it's your call as to whether you want to put the work into this one. And it is hard to see how bad the damage is from that pic.

It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Thats a Henckels box. Don't know if that is not a Wester Bros De-Fi or something else!

    I rest my case.

    Very good point!

Does the ad state that it's a Henckels razor? Tom's absolutely right that while the box says Henckels, the razor itself could be just about anything. The last two razors I bought with boxes were a Frederick Reynolds in a Joseph Allen box, and a Boker in a W&B box.

Jody - I don't think it's worth the $25 asking price. Also, a good rule of thumb is to never buy anything based on fuzzy out-of-focus photos. If you are you looking for a project razor, you will probably have to more than double your investment to get a working razor. If you are patient and watchful, there are often decent razors in the classifieds that can be had for less money than this razor will eventually cost you.

    Regards - Walt
