Thread: New from Seattle

Hey everyone just wanted to say hi finally.
My name is Nick and have been tearing through all the information here at SRP.
After about 6-7 months I decided to pay up at SRD and buy a Ralf Aust 5/8 and a SRD 2" Latigo Leather strop. I have been shaving for about 4 days with successful results!
I did take my sweet time however (Sorry) did not follow lynn's advice and only shave down from the sideburns, I shaved my whole face which took forever and resulted in irritated skin and a small cut on my cheek. I would not recommend my approach to anyone I just like to learn the hard way!

I have not been able to afford a quality brush or soap but look forward the far more comfortable shaves when I can!

Welcome to the nut house, and I too, chose to do things the hard way. It was pre SRP days though when I started off for the first time.

Hello and welcome.
I think that the minority of members here probably followed the advice of only shave a cheek to start with . Please don't fret about expensive soaps etc, with good technique cheaper products can serve you well.

I am finding new and better technique's every shave however shaving with a 5 dollar AAFE's special brush (Van Der Hagen), NIVIA shaving cream, and a coffee cup does not make the experiance very grand

I use a $12 chemists special brush half the time, and I use $2 soap, mixed with creams to make.uberlather, half.the creams.I own cost less.than $5 each, and are as able as the more.expensive.ones I own. I have VDH soap melted into a coffee mug for.occasional use, and my main soap bowl is a $2 mini casserole dish from the supermarket, in it resides Palmolive shave stick grated up, that stick costs about $2.
I like my ad-hoc set up, and it works fine, but I suppose using more fancy stuff may feel more.special. there is no rush, you will be doing this fir quite a few more years, so you have plenty of birthdays, Christmases, fathers days, anniversaries etc to get the fancy stuff, that way it will be extra special as all of it will be gifts.

Hi and welcome. Like Ed I started with the cheap soaps and creams and I think both together would cost 5 bucks which is about the same for my first brush although I used a soup cup. Still use the soap and cream 50% of the time. The Ralf Aust is a great shaver and is one of my favorites at the moment. Good luck with the shaves and keep us updated. Ed
