    Exclamation honemeister in south florida

i just got a new 5/8 dovo in the mail today. it is supposedly shave ready, but after browsing through the forum that doesnt seem to be the case all the time. so i am trying to find a honemeister in south florida to bring it to. i looked all over the place with no luck. i'm going to shave with it tonight anyways to see how well it shaves, but a point in the right direction would be much appreciated. thanks in advance.

Go to the classifieds section on here. Worst case you can send it away and it will take a couple days. It's well worth the wait and piece of mind it will be done right.

A member called Zib does honing in Jacksonville; I realize that's not exactly "southern" Florida, but at least he's in the same state. He's also listed in the classifieds under member services ("Southern Honing and Restoration"), and he does good work. Good Luck!

i just shaved with it and it actually wasnt that bad. towards the end of my second pass got a lil hard, but i think it might be ok as soon as i get my hands on a strope. with the exception of a couple of cuts and some razor burn, i have a fairly smooth shave. it was my first time shaving with a straight razor so i assume some of it came down to my technique.

It depends on where you bought it, if the vendor sells factory edges then I believe they can be hit.or miss, but if the vendor hand hones them before delivery then it should be shave ready, the best bet would be to ask the vendor which is the case for razors they sell.

I've rehoned every single razor that has come "shave ready" not because it wasn't honed properly but because it wasn't honed to my liking. Many of these razors came from well known folks or businesses so they know what they are doing but some of these sources are what some consider a "honemeister" so the term means squat.

Give this fellow a call: http://thesuperiorshave.com/index.html

By the way, get yourself a strop and learn to use it really well. This vendor sells a two inch oil tanned cow hide that won't break the bank and you'll get good service out of it. Be patient and don't goop up the new strop with a bunch of snake oils in an effort to make it better. Break it in naturally with use. Rub it briskly with your hand and use it. This will make your shaves remarkably improve. And, you'll have a new favorite thing to do. Remember, deliberate, methodical movements on that strop will get you to where you want to be.....depending on how quickly you learn of course.

    Good luck.
