Hi all
I am going to go to the barber tomorrow to have my head shaved. I have some questions for after I am done. Has anybody used a double edge safety razor to shave their head on a regular basis. I am a little worried to use my straight razor on my head at least for now. Also what kind of lotion and suntan lotion do you all use once you've first shave your head. Any advice would be great thank you.

Ditto on both DE an headblade. Not an advertisement but check out headblades website. You will get some good ideas of whats out there for us bald ones. Go slow at first. Your skin will take some time to adjust to being shaved. Also use the same wet shaving techniques. WTG, XTG, ATG works great for me.
Shave my head daily, with a DE. I've tried the Headblade but believe it or not....I cut my self. It was the most awkward razor I've ever used, just my 2 cents.
A Merkur Slant is my favorite, either loaded with an Astra or Feather. Although I use a Weber too. My first pass is usually ATG, then XTG feel for stubble and do touchups as needed. Otherwise I would go with reduction WTG, XTG, ATG. Prep is usually a shower, Noxzema (or Jojoba oil), lather over the Noxzema, shave. As far as suntan lotion, I haven't settled on one my self, still searching. They're all greasy to me and that really bothers me. so still looking.....
Headblade makes or made a sunblock I think it's 30 SPF, Nivea and Neutrogena too, I think they are 15 SPF (not really enough) IMO. But I'm going to lean toward Nivea, they are probably the least greasy feeling to me.
*Don't forget a hat & sunblock the ears ;)
As others have said, a DE is fine for head-shaving.
Once you get familiar with the growth pattern though, give a straight shave a try as well.
Nothing quite like mastering the straight on the blind side:)
When it comes to suntan lotions and such, I only wish I could advice you.

Thanks guys for all the information. For now I decided to get a Gillette fusion for shaving my head. It works very well. Just wanted to know how many shaves on average will one cartridge work for.

No clue roger,Do not have alot of stubble to remove,if I use a D.E I get 4 headshaves out of a feather Blade,If I use My headblade with cheap two blade atras,I can go maybe 6/7 shaves.Quote:

You can also go a 2 blade or 3 blade route (I find BIC 2 blades, 3 pack at my local 99 cent store all the time), and that can work as well.
Just take your time - your bean needs some time to get used to being out in the open :)

Once you learn the growth pattern its the same as shaving your face. Until you get proficient a second mirror to see the back of the head while shaving is a help. After a couple weeks you will have it down. An completely agree with jimbo on the hat comment. I usually wear a ball cap anyways. But especially when out in the sun. Only takes one good burn to "learn" ya. :cen < you don't want your scalp looking like that.
If you do get sunburn on your head, let your hair grow back out until it fully heals.
I must be a slow learner - I think I've burned my scalp several times, I just never seem to learn lol - I use to wear ball caps, and would get an arch burned into the back of my head, wear the band goes across. Fitted ball caps seem to be the way to go.Quote:

I have been shaving the head 4x a week for around 10yrs. The Mach was my choice for many years, But have had great success switching to the DE over the last 6 months. I have now alternated between straight and DE and love both! Good Luck!!
15 years head shaving and i never found the cartridge that would do two passes comfortably, YMMV. Swapped to a straight for everything a few months back and after 7 good nicks and a slice (all at the top back right and left) I got it down. No more razor bumps/ingrown-hairs (unavoidable with every cart I tried) since the swap. I will say that after one, two pass, shave I have to touch up the straight; also I recommend stropping between passes.
As to sunscreen I, like others before me, recommend a hat. A hat is the one way to guarantee no burn.
Almost 15 years head shaving. The first three years was the Mach 3, then from 2003 to 2008 I used a DE. Then in 2008 I switched to shaving my head with a straight. I do two passes both with the grain and two against. I get a much smoother shave. In 2000 I started shaving my head, I had a rat tail and I started noticing a widows peak and I decided to shave my head. The widows peak area is still small and I could basically grow 95 percent of the hair I had but I'm keeping my head shaved for good since it is low maintenance and I love a having a shiny smooth dome.
I've been shaving my skull for a few years now. I use the HB Sport, push the blade, vs the ATX which pulls the blade. I can't use the ATX at all. The Sport is my weapon of choice but I'm slowly starting to use my DE, G - slim adjustable. I shave almost daily. As far as "miles per blade", I get about 5 shaves per Sensor Excell blade on my head and about the same mileage out of a DE blade (used on my face). If a DE blade can't make it thru 4 shaves I have deemed the brand a dud. I prefer fewer blades in my carts because they get clogged with cuttins. If I skip a couple of days of head shaving I have to change the cart sooner. So they are changed at least weekly. On the weekends I try to make time to really slow down and enjoy the process. During the week it's hurry up, utility work.
One thing I can say, shaving ones head is not the easy way out. Think about it, you can shampoo and rinse in a minute vs the 10 minutes for a two pass shave just to get through a work day. Visits to a barber shop every 6 - 8 weeks are much easier than dealing with it every day or two. It simply came down to either shaving my head or being unhappy with how I looked with hair loss.
How hard is it to shave your head with a straight? Right until reading this thread I considered it to be impossible without even trying.
Is it something everyone could do, or must I be able to shave my face eyes-closed first?
It's probably better if you are confident with using a straight first. I wouldn't go so far as to say you need to be able to shave your face with your eyes closed however. Just know how to control the razor and be confident with your grips and angles. Certainly the back of the head is the area most people worry about as you cannot see exactly what is happening. But if you go carefully and pay attention it's not as bad as you think.
