I'm guessing the razor is a Wapienica and that there shouldn't be any issues with it. I just thought of another explanation...
If the razor hasn't been sharpened and was just sitting somewhere for 30 years, it could be just a weak oxidized edge, prone to microchipping. Eventually you'll hone out the weak part, but I'd recommend taping the spine first.

No, but there's only one brand of Polish razors that Wojtec carries AFIK.

Thanked: 1Yes it is a Wapienica bought from Wojtec. I am new to straights and honing so I thought it was was something I was doing wrong and hoped that you might know what. If the advise is still the same I'll tape the spine and keep going.
I received a shave ready from Ivo today, so I have a bench-mark. I don't know if I should shave with it or keep it as a reference.
(dying to try it - afraid to try it / my god its sharp)
edit: will have to try a get a norton soon. Would it need to be lapped from new, coners rounded?Last edited by heliguy; 03-16-2007 at 07:13 PM.

Try shaving with it so you know what to expect. Be extra gentle on the strop. Getting a Norton is a great idea and it will need to be lapped/rounded from new. Some come ready out of the box, but if you lap it as soon as you get it, you eliminate one variable.

Thanked: 79Just wanted to add that I got my first Wapienica (also from Wojtec) shave ready with that exact hone....question, are you using wet or dry, and with or without lather? I also found the stone works better if you have something to rub up a slurry with (I used 2 of those hones and some water). Slurry, then water, then lather, then strop....it worked for me anyway. Dry I think it's a bit less forgiving to the metal.

Thanked: 1I also have what I think is a 220/1k knife stone that I used to flatten and take the corners off the 4k (just now) I have been using the 4k with water but removed all the slurry after flattening as I am afraid that some of the 1k grit would interfere. so up to now I had flattened it, cleaned it and honed with just water. I have noticed that every now and then hear/feel a pop? like the blade is catching something but I cannot feel anything rough with my finger tips.
