I think you may be in the right area just ensure you narrow down your area you live in the request
I'm not sure how big NYC is but for me I put Gladstone in Central Queensland Australia the next closest town to me is 120km north & 175km south
where as if I put just CQ it is an area about 600km x 600km (360,000km2)
I think you may be a bit luckier in you area though

Then "member list"
You could do an advanced search for members by area, then just see if they have a mentor tag, drop them a message and see what happens :)
