Thread: A new face, and a old razor.

So hello all of you, i'm dukejuke for you

Now i have recently found myself wanting to learn shaving with a straight razor, and voila i found an old razor amidst old family stuff. Coincidence or not, it led me here!

Now this little thing here is what i got, the inscription says "Atkinson Bros" and underneath "Sheffield" with an A stamped diagonally downwards from it.

A little internet searching led me to believe this is a quite good razor, once honed and polished to a sheen.
Is this true? The rest of it is fine and in good condition too, little rivets and the uhh sides (??) seem to be in good shape.

Welcome to SRP Duke. That's a nice old razor you've got there and the scales ("sides" as you described them) are first rate. This razor deserves careful treatment, after which it is likely to become a great shaver. There's a lot of guys here who can help you out, both with the blade and the scales. You'll find a variety of views on how far to go in restoration: I'm in the minimalist camp, that is I don't believe in shining up everything that can be shined up. Anyway, let's sit back and see who shows up!

BTW this razor is way more than 100 years old

Way more than.... welp, How do you know that? is it the "A"? or is atkinson just that old? so this is handcrafted? i mean, not factory stamped or worked? wow, uhh i have some legacy to live up to i think ^^

Welcome. He knows that because it's stamped Sheffield and not Sheffield, England, which would have been the case had it been made after 1890, due to an act whose name I cannot recall atm.

I too, think a mild resto is in order, enough to clean the crud off and then get to hacking whiskers, and if at a later date you decide you want go further with it...

I think this should go to a professional first, the edge has a few nicks, and from what i read, those eh saw teeth are probably completely gone?

But i'll be damned. I can and will shave with that thing!
