Thread: FYI, straight razors are sharp!

Today was my 11th shave and it had the makings of what was by far my best shave with a straight. Unfortunately, I sliced my right thumb while transferring the straight from my left hand to the right without looking. I guess using the "no looker" passing technique is a bit too advanced for me right now. .

What I tried differently was an Omega 10065 boar brush, stropped a bit more than my usual 50/60, then heated up the blade in the hot water I used to soak the brush in. I'd like to try that combo next time to see if I can duplicate the shave....minus the finger slice of course.

Heck only your thumb? Wait til you get your lip, ear or face. No matter how long you have used a straight at some point it will bite you.

It happens. I have cut my fingers a few times but while honing.

I know that finger cutting technique!
I've definitely cut my fingers more than my face.

Oh yeah.
Cut the top of my left ring finger pinning at the Tomah meet. Luckily for me, Utopian was there in a flash with a bandaid. Did not have time to get a "Cut of the Day" as it never bled again.

I think we all have had the cut fingers to match our faces at one time or another! I really sliced the heck out of my thumb a couple of months back trying to polish a blade.

After I got used to not cutting my face, my thumb wanted some action.

The funny thing is that I didn't even feel it until I felt the impact on the blade through my other hand....if that makes sense.

It makes perfect sense - that's how I noticed that I had cut my thumb while shaving too. No pain at first; just a *bump* and then the realization, "uh oh..."

At least you noticed. I waited to fling blood everywhere until I realized there was a problem.

Yea, did that too honing and the boss was none too happy about it, the cut not the blood on the wall.
