Razbo: First Blood.

Last week I got a nice little razor off of eBay (picture below) and some honing stones from SRD. My goal was to learn how to hone and maintain the blade of a razor and to do that as cheaply as possible. The blade I chose was an inexpensive vintage razor that I bid like 30 bucks for and won. As it turned out, this one needed to be honed from bevel set all the way up. It was in really good shape with nothing strange or difficult about the blade, so that process went quickly and easily thanks to Lynn's and gssixgun's videos and the excellent advice from expert members here at SRP.

This morning I had my first shave with it and it's a smooth shaving little razor. I love it. I did learn, however, why a round point is recommended for new straight razor shavers. On a XTG pass going from ear towards nose, that little square point on the the razor caught my upper cheek. No paramedics were called. There was only one drop of blood and a single touch of a styptic pencil was the only necessary first aid treatment, but it is a reminder to new shavers or those who have never used a square point razor before to be mindful of that little square tip, it will bite you if you let t.

Nice looking razor and congrats on a successful honing! I picked up a Morley from an antique store a few weeks back. A little rust, but honed up really fast and shaves great.

Yupper, found out the hard way too about square points not being really suited to beginners. If you get a good one you can always claim it is a dueling scar. At least the honing went well, congrats.

I love a square point. You'll get used to it.
